GPU runs always at max.
Hello guys, since a few months i have a problem with the Hunter COTW. As soon as the game is startet on my PC, my GPU runs at 99-100%. It doesnt matter if I'm only in the menu or if im actually playing it's always maxed out and that doesn't happen in any other game i play (EFT,Red dead 2, Witcher 3 etc.)
I'm running:

I7 3770
ASUS P8B75-M
16GB DDR3 RAM 1866mhz
GTX 1060 6GB
Samsung 860pro evo SSD

no overclock or anything, and running the latest Nvidia Drivers

GPU is supposed to run 70% to 100% (Thanks dc2dixon), if you ever see it dipping really low then it becomes a hardware issue. Having it run at max is extremely normal and nothing to worry about. Lots of other games also run at max.

Hi, so I actually think something is really wrong with the game (because nothing has changed for any other game or program).

For me it started only a week ago, last Wednesday night actually. Last year I could easily run this game on medium to high on my GT 750 ti, I have a new GTX 1660 and while the fan used to run at about 60% speed (1800-2000rpm) and the gpu 70 degrees, since a week my GPU is hitting almost 80 degrees and the fan runs at a max speed (` 2500 rpm) all the time while in-game. I remember this happened while I was playing that Wednesday night, and caused a crash, first crash I've ever had in this game. Since then my GPU overheats and my fan runs at max, even though I've even lowered my settings from HIGH to MEDIUM.

Let me repeat, no other app or game experiences any kind of problem.

Is there going to be a fix? Is it only my PC? should I reinstall?
If your GPU runs at a much lower rate then there is an issue with your GPU, other games like Tom Clancy Siege runs 70-100 and lots of other high end games even New World ran around 80%. this isn't a bug, it's supposed to run like this.

Your rig probably has stock/bad cooling... considering that judging by this thread you don't sound like you really know much about computers I'd think this is the most likely cause to your overheating issues. Also you do kind of want to customize your GPU's fan behavior so that it never goes below 30%. Personally I have mine set to idle at 30% speed, up to 60% speed once GPU hits 45 degrees, and 100% speed once GPU hits 60 degrees (C)

But note that heat from your other components can add heat to your GPU if those components are badly cooled/overheating as well. It also depends on how your case is set up. If you bought your PC from a retail store there is a high chance it's a
Both of you seem to be ignoring the "every other game runs smootly, even this one did till last Wednesday." But it's fine. Anybody else know anything? - on the GPU side though, I don't want my GPU to run over 2000 rpm because I don't like the noise which is normal noise, nothing special, so I purpousfully run my games on lower settings to limit this while keeping ideal temperature. So, I'de rather run it in medium quality with the fan running under that speed than not.
Ok, SO I honestly took your considerations into account, and I did a few tests. I ran other games I play, to see if the GPU will overheat with them, and they run just as they did before. Same load on the GPU, samo speeds, same temps as before. But this game, which I like and I honestly want to fix, just pushes my GPU to the max at lower settings than it did last week. I might not be a PC wiz, but I know that's weird.

This game does tend to use more resources than about 65% of other modern games, but nothing excessive assuming you have up-to-date hardware. High GPU/CPU use up to 100% means nothing in fact it is actually good etiquette for both to be running at max in any game (anything else means they are not fully utilized in the game). That does not mean your fan speeds will be equivalent, but unless you spend extra money on quality cooling then you're going to be stuck with 100% fan speeds for games such as this which have both good graphical fidelity and a lot of computer processes and mathematics going on at all times in the backround. (You can pretty much assume this would be the case in any game that has hundreds to thousands of persistent AI instead of instanced)

This game is also graphically well-off compared to most games out there which means it will put more stress on your GPU heat-wise. And as you play it more, your GPU will gradually become more stressed as your maps mature and the animal populations increase on them.

In all honesty I sounds like something on your end is simply on the thresh-hold of being good enough and not being good enough so you're seeing small things make big differences.

For example... I'm on an i-7 7700k, GTX 1080 Ti, 16GB of DDR4 ram, I don't have great cooling but it isn't stock either.

I'm running GPU and CPU both at 70% to 100%, as they should be
My CPU temps are hovering around 55ish and my GPU temps are at around 67. This is well within reason as no damage will be caused until the temps reach 82+ C

So, ok, read all this, and I ave almost the same PC, and till last week I had the same CPU and GPU temps. So, why is my GPU now 75 with the RPMs up there.

So I stumbled on something, booted up the game, and tried playing it on Ultra and then rolled back the setting to High, Medium, Low. GPU use was at 100% all of the time. Non-stop. Nothing changed, neither temp nor fan speed, and the GPU use was 100% all the time. In comparison I ran Age of Wonders 3 (20% use), Spellforce 3 (60% use) and Rainbow Six Siege (60-80% use). So what I mean is, this game runs all the time as if I was running it at ULTRA, even when the settings are down to Low. I hope this helps.
Nah, as I said, new GPU, completely revamped and clean PC since 3 weeks, works great with every other game or program.

Only bugs on this game, and only since a week, it worked fine before.

As I said, the GPU acts as if it was running on ULTRA all the time, even when it's on the lowest settings.

I hope this gets fixed, or that I can fix it. Any other ideas? Is it possible the config file got set to ULTRA and does not react to changes in-game? can I hard reset the config somehow? Is it possible something else uses my GPU while in-game?

Just to repeat, done the tests, the phenomenon is isolated to this game alone, and empirically it has worked properly before.

It seems like we have exactly the same problem. I tried what you said running it on several detail settings and it really behaves the same on all of them. My GPU didn't "Overheat" but for example it reached 71°C after beeing in the main menu for 5mins and the fans ramped up to max speed. Even after playing Witcher 3 for a few hours the fans never reached full rpm and it could still hold 70°C

And bad cooling or dust is also not an option because i had my PC run for several Days straight during lan partys and the fans never reached max speed even while gaming. Also i clean my pc regularly.

I really hope they can fix it, because it's really annoing to have a turbine next to me, while playing a game that isn't really detailed compared to AAA titles.
This game absolutely runs my 1080ti hotter than most. Fan is loud. Need headphones. But no crashing.
hee game doesnt crash for me also, but as you say it's really annoying. And it can't be good for your gpu, I usually play for 4-5 hours straight and it would definetely thermal throttle and have crap performace.
If your gpu isn't running at 85-100% than it's being bottlenecked by your cpu. This game demands as much from the cpu as it does the gpu. I imagine your 3rd-gen i7 has to work really hard to run this game. My i7-7700k gets a workout running this and, on paper, it's almost twice as fast as your 3770. Unless you're water cooling your cpu this will also bump up the gpu temperature.

By the way, modern video cards are designed to run full-throttle all the time
I have a 4070ti and it STILL tries to max it out. I have lowered the settings to low, still maxing it out. I cannot stream this game if it is being so greedy, As much as I want to, I have several other things that also need some of that pie.

I don't remember how I fixed it, but I'm almost sure it was a fresh install. Something broke at a certain moment with some update, and what fixed it for me, was just a completely fresh install. Hope this helps.
