For me it started only a week ago, last Wednesday night actually. Last year I could easily run this game on medium to high on my GT 750 ti, I have a new GTX 1660 and while the fan used to run at about 60% speed (1800-2000rpm) and the gpu 70 degrees, since a week my GPU is hitting almost 80 degrees and the fan runs at a max speed (` 2500 rpm) all the time while in-game. I remember this happened while I was playing that Wednesday night, and caused a crash, first crash I've ever had in this game. Since then my GPU overheats and my fan runs at max, even though I've even lowered my settings from HIGH to MEDIUM.
Let me repeat, no other app or game experiences any kind of problem.
Is there going to be a fix? Is it only my PC? should I reinstall?
Your rig probably has stock/bad cooling... considering that judging by this thread you don't sound like you really know much about computers I'd think this is the most likely cause to your overheating issues. Also you do kind of want to customize your GPU's fan behavior so that it never goes below 30%. Personally I have mine set to idle at 30% speed, up to 60% speed once GPU hits 45 degrees, and 100% speed once GPU hits 60 degrees (C)
But note that heat from your other components can add heat to your GPU if those components are badly cooled/overheating as well. It also depends on how your case is set up. If you bought your PC from a retail store there is a high chance it's a
This game does tend to use more resources than about 65% of other modern games, but nothing excessive assuming you have up-to-date hardware. High GPU/CPU use up to 100% means nothing in fact it is actually good etiquette for both to be running at max in any game (anything else means they are not fully utilized in the game). That does not mean your fan speeds will be equivalent, but unless you spend extra money on quality cooling then you're going to be stuck with 100% fan speeds for games such as this which have both good graphical fidelity and a lot of computer processes and mathematics going on at all times in the backround. (You can pretty much assume this would be the case in any game that has hundreds to thousands of persistent AI instead of instanced)
This game is also graphically well-off compared to most games out there which means it will put more stress on your GPU heat-wise. And as you play it more, your GPU will gradually become more stressed as your maps mature and the animal populations increase on them.
In all honesty I sounds like something on your end is simply on the thresh-hold of being good enough and not being good enough so you're seeing small things make big differences.
For example... I'm on an i-7 7700k, GTX 1080 Ti, 16GB of DDR4 ram, I don't have great cooling but it isn't stock either.
I'm running GPU and CPU both at 70% to 100%, as they should be
My CPU temps are hovering around 55ish and my GPU temps are at around 67. This is well within reason as no damage will be caused until the temps reach 82+ C
So I stumbled on something, booted up the game, and tried playing it on Ultra and then rolled back the setting to High, Medium, Low. GPU use was at 100% all of the time. Non-stop. Nothing changed, neither temp nor fan speed, and the GPU use was 100% all the time. In comparison I ran Age of Wonders 3 (20% use), Spellforce 3 (60% use) and Rainbow Six Siege (60-80% use). So what I mean is, this game runs all the time as if I was running it at ULTRA, even when the settings are down to Low. I hope this helps.
Only bugs on this game, and only since a week, it worked fine before.
As I said, the GPU acts as if it was running on ULTRA all the time, even when it's on the lowest settings.
I hope this gets fixed, or that I can fix it. Any other ideas? Is it possible the config file got set to ULTRA and does not react to changes in-game? can I hard reset the config somehow? Is it possible something else uses my GPU while in-game?
Just to repeat, done the tests, the phenomenon is isolated to this game alone, and empirically it has worked properly before.
And bad cooling or dust is also not an option because i had my PC run for several Days straight during lan partys and the fans never reached max speed even while gaming. Also i clean my pc regularly.
I really hope they can fix it, because it's really annoing to have a turbine next to me, while playing a game that isn't really detailed compared to AAA titles.
By the way, modern video cards are designed to run full-throttle all the time
