The host opens a multiplayer game for friends only. Then he sends an invitation over steam to his friend(s):
The other friend(s) shall have closed the game before. the game must not run when they get the invitation!!
Then the friend(s) start the game only by applying to the invitation. The game will start automatically and lead them into the session of the host.
Only the host shall send any invitations and the one who wants to join should have the game closed before!
With public servers you will have same precedure if you join the game over invitations. otherways you search the public servers for your friends session and can easily join over the server list.
