Here's a link to Classic Wiki they made a 10g lever action shotgun.
It's the width of the shell... The larger the gauge the more narrow the shell is.
The article says you can take a deer at 200 yards with a 20 gauge slug... and a bear at 50 yards. The bear he took only took one slug with no follow up needed and only managed to get 40 yards from where the shot took place.
