Your footsteps are too loud in this game.
Headphones: Sennheiser HD600
Amp: Denon

Hello, I just picked this game up finally, and it's actually pretty good these days. Your team has come a long way and should be proud of how nicely the game is coming along.

One thing I think breaks immersion a little bit is the player footsteps. I see there is a skill to cause less noise in certain settings, but I don't have that yet, and quite honestly the mix is a bit out of whack.

I use a receiver and headphones, and I know that a sound presentation can sometimes not be for multiple types of equipment, but even then the footsteps are too overpowering. When I am just crouching down doing almost nothing I can hear a distinct crunch and echo that should never be there in real life. It just sounds way too aggressive, and quite honestly it bothers me when just walking around.

I am someone that hikes regularly with full gear, and people are simply not this loud. You could honestly lower the player footsteps and sounds by 5dB+ and it would be great. The sound profile of the person is just too loud. Gear does not make that much noise out in the wild.

Please, just give us an option to lower player footsteps sounds in the audio mix!

I agree that footstep sounds are too loud.

Yeah, I think it something when you are just trying to enjoy the immersion. It sucks because they need to be just a bit lower in this game.
Yup the sounds are way off, a fricn jack rabbit 200yrds away sounds like a giant 2 ft away and the audio direction is off too, you hear something in front move your head an inch and its now behind you. Ive not had the game long but this is the biggest gripe for me near impossible to tell how far and what direction an animal is from the sound... Ive tried on board sound, my Asus Xonar Essence STX II and my usb creative superX FI its the same with all of them so not a hardware problem...

Spot on. You need to post this in the current thread about the sound in general discussion. (Locate noise source/direction) Poor bloke is getting crap from the fanboys insisting he's deaf or has crap audio.

Yeah, I totally agree, and it is why I am keeping this thread open. I won't be playing much of it or supporting more DLC until the sound is better. I can wait. No big deal. It's a very cool game.
I agree with most of the other posts on here about the audio issues. As a professional audio engineer the sound drives me a bit crazy at times. To start I think they did a fantastic job with capturing some of the different calls of animals. I would personally like to hear more and of varying degrees but great work. The audio issues I hear are the following: (please note I feel some are for reality purposes and some are for enjoyment).
1. Personal footsteps for the player are too loud. (just as a note. If I walk slowly on a paved road or MOSS in real life I make almost no sound).
2. There is only a slight difference in volume and sfx of all animals like a buffalo walking and a rabbit cause about the same volume of noise. The rabbit just causes more activity as they run around more. Also when a buffalo runs there needs to be ALOT more thump and brush noise. That needs to be greatly adjusted.
3. There needs to be a headphone setting as it is so different from speakers.
4. When playing in multiplayer the other player audio is set to reverse Left/Right and Front/Back (i.e. if someone is walking behind you their sound is almost always in front and if they are off to your left their sound comes from the right).
5. I would like to be able to quietly step over or up on a small bump instead of having to stand up and jump to traverse the small rocks and make a bunch of noise..
6. The background/environment noises are repetitive and loud.
7. Not an issue just another observation: My favorite are the geese. They did a great job capturing how loud and obnoxious they can be. Probably the best represented to reality. I would like to see more of that throughout.

Some great points here. Yes, and audiophile, audio is very important to me, and I would really really love to see some improvements in this game.
I'm not against what you all say about the own noises are too loud, but I want to mention, to not forget your load out. Some walk around with 3 rifles/bow/pistol/flints, needed ammunition, several callers, binocular, not to mention the weight of a tent/tripod/... . You still think, with all that stuff bouncing and hanging from you, you are able to walk quietly? Crawling would be impossible.

In the end, what does count is not whow loud you hear yourself, but the indicator, at the bottom right, that tells you how loud you are to the animals.

If you can't hear animals while walking; An old wise man once said "Stand a while and listen!".

Nah, even with lighter loads this game is just really loud and crunchy. It needs to be worked on. It's not a huge or supremely complex thing to adjust. Just volume matching footsteps would solve a lot of issues, and offering a better headphone experience.

You make the same sound regardless of how much weight you carry in the game. I would be fine with the sound scaling up the more you carry, but this is not the case.

I walk through the forest and fields every day with my dog and we have surprized countless animals in the past and I don´t sneak around when walking my dog. I walk rather fast tbh.

The sounddesign is honestly very bad in this game and it doesn´t seem like they are going to fix it at any point. I bought the game when it released on steam and the rabbits are that loud ever since, which is a shame for the devs.

Often time rabbits influenced my hunts negatively, because I thought the footsteps of the rabbits, which in reality you wouldn´t hear at all, belong to a completely different animal and much much bigger.

The fact that they didn´t adjust this after all those years is quite shocking to me. It´s only a little adjustment but they just don´t do it.

And having geese making a hell of noice every two minutes is not very immersive either, same goes for the stupidly repetetive wolve howls. It´s the same.
Just annoying and especially annoying when you constantly hear them but can´t find a single one, but that´s another topic.

Well all we can do is leave the thread here and hope they are listening. Maybe the Steam sales went well, and they can invest a little into the audio.

I'll definitely be buying all the rest of the DLC if they can fix the audio at some point.

I had a bow, the binos, and 3 or 4 callers and made way too much noise. It wouldn't have been so bad, but some of the noise sounded like the swivels and metal buckles for a rifle sling slapping the stock. It really made me want to break out the electrical tape and start taping down all the loose stuff.

Ha, yeah definitely, but one thing that really bothers me is just the actual footsteps on various surfaces. They are loud as heck, and the main issue I have.
probably get flamed for this, but this sounds (ha ha) like its a sound card setting.

It isn't. Compared to other sounds in game, you steps are loud. Compared to real life, your steps are loud.
