I've been waiting for the games industry to allow this for years. Most of my friends are console gamers, I'm a PC gamer. Always wanted to play with them but can't.
Cross play is what the industry calls it, and there are a few reasons the majority of titles don't allow cross play. But before I get into that, I'll say this.... there is no valid technical reason in 2018. The game engines these games are built on top of are platform agnostic so that a single code base can be used to build for PC, PS4, Wii, Andoid, iOS, etc.
1) The console gaming culture views PC players as having unfair advantage because of superior hardware and mouse+keyboard aiming/shooting is much, much faster than using a controller.
These claims are true and valid for highly competitive games, especially shooters. Some games try to level the playing field with auto-aim for controller/console users. But then the argument is THOSE players have the unfair advantage.
Regarding hardware advantage, a good gaming rig will allow the player to see and react quicker. Between the higher frame rate, faster monitor response time, and lesser input lag, PC players can have a huge advantage.
I can see games that are extremely competitive creating brackets that pit only PC players against other PC players and console against console. But there should be casual play.
2) Cheating is mainly a PC problem. The console culture views it as the majority of PC players cheat, so they want no part of us.
In my experience though, people tend to claim anyone with superior skill/ability has to be cheating when the person loses.
But yes, this is a valid claim.
3) The industry main players don't want cross play because it would reduce their revenue stream. Kids need an XBox and a PS4 if they want to be able to play with all their friends. Sony is very much against cross play and will not cooperate with any efforts to tear down the barriers.
Fortnite's cross play support matrix speaks volumes. https://www.polygon.com/2018/3/23/17146848/cross-platform-crossplay-ps4-xbox-pc-switch-ios-mobile-enable-friends-compatible-matchmaking
This isn't because of Fortnite, but because of Sony. They won't allow their platform to play with XBox or Switch.
As a reason, Sony cites that keeping PS4 players ring fenced, that is necessary for Sony to monitor and police the community, keep kids safe, etc.
That might be valid for games that are ESRB rated E, E10, and maybe even Teen, but doesn't really make sense for M17 rated games.
What I think is really going on is Sony is staying out of the sandbox and not playing well in order to protect their brand by forcing kids to buy the platform other kids have.
Microsoft is trying to make the futre for cross platform play a little bright with their Play Anywhere program (https://www.xbox.com/en-US/games/xbox-play-anywhere). While it doesn't enable cross play, it at least would keep you from having to double purchase titles on PC and Xbox. The problem is, few titles support it and you have to buy iot from the windows store (not steam or any other retailer). You can guess why titles don't jump on the Play Anywhere program. They make money forcing people to double or triple purchase titles so they can play with all their friends.
My opinion is the cheating problem is really hurting us. If the PC gaming community could weed those out it would help. Never could really grasp what one gains by hacking a game and cheating, but then again I am not 17.
Kanazira, not a bad idea, would give the dev's another source of income. Maybe a private server that monitored.
Can't really add any more to that....
It's always about the MONEY...
Call of Duty: Modern Warefare is the perfect example of how crossplay works perfectly! Sony is no longer a barrier against crossplay. Even if they were, all I really would like to see is PC and Xbox crossplay. I would spend money for a crossplay DLC in a heartbeat!!!
It would bring so many more players.
If we have crossplay, we can play with more people, and friends!
That and like said above - Sony doesn't play nicely with anyone else.
