Traditional/ Historical Bows from around the World
The Houyi Recurve Bow is really fantastic. I love the Hou Yi backstory, how the bow looks and performs in game, the challenge of learning how to use it. In addition to modern bow/crossbow/ reverser crossbow DLC, I would love to see more traditional/ historical bow/ crossbow DLC, historical/ traditional bows and crossbows from all different cultures, from all around the World.

An English Long Bow would be great, Kaned. I would love to see an English Long Bow in game. I hope the Dev team can include all kinds of historically significant Bow types, from lots of different cultures all around the World, including the English Long Bow.

I know mate, the classic dev team made an American Longbow, but they never made an English longbow. I would definately like to see both. And more :)

What are the differences anyway?

Between American and English longbows?

The English long bow has an equal taper and is Oval the whole length.
The American Longbow (also called the Flatbow) has flat limbs that shaped into an Oval hand grip.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flatbow
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English_longbow

Performance wise, well, that’s down to who made the bow and who’s shooting.

I’ve used both and I can’t really say which was better. Both shot straight and true. Both were around the 35 pound pull range. Both had impact. Both were incredibly quiet. But the sound of the wood on wood, is divine. Like the sound of a sublime Rolls Royce engine. Just perfect. (Also dev’s good work on the sound design used for the Houyi bows, I love holstering it, just to hear the arrow hit the bow,, that sound :D ) And both were sexy and made you feel like an OG archer.

Also both weighed NOTHING! Like you could hold the bows with just your little finger and not strain.
So just saying dev’s that Houyi recurve bow. In real life probably would weight as much as the 338 bullet. Any chance you can reduce it’s inventory cost :) lol

I would like to see both bows represented. Bows from around the globe.

Hope this answers your question dude :)

Yeah sure, thanks.

But if they seem to be really similar, why would you suggest to add both bows?
Kaned Dragon Jun 6, 2018 @ 9:08am
To avoid favouritism, because they represent some amount of historical heritage for Both USA and UK respectively. Because the English longbow never turned up in Classic, but they made a flat bow (Favouritism)

Why have multiple skins for some of the weapons, 270, crossbows, recurve, but not change the performance.

Imagine if the devs made a US longbow and UK longbow, but one performed better than the other. People who favour the bow that’s been given a handicap will be irritated. I certainly would be annoyed if they released an English Longbow that looked awesome but performed badly compared tp the US bow.

Also, a big point.
The arrow sizes.
The hawk compound bow, has arrows for all animals. But that isn’t calculating the power of the bow. I can shoot a rabbit with a 70lbs compound bow, but because I’m using the 300grn arrows, I get the integrity bonus.
When in reality, that arrow would have eviscerate that bunny, because the 70lbs force behind the arrow would do to much damage.
Then there’s the houyi recurve which only has one heavy arrow. So we can’t use it for the integrity bonus for the Fallow deer :-/

It seems the big changer would be what sized arrow we get and what range they can effectively hunt.
Not the bows themselves.

Hell, add the Japanese Samurai bows, The Mongolian Bows, although I think the Houyi is meant to represent those bows. One piece modern recurses. And many more.
Then there’s crossbows.
I guess Id like to see a weapons DLC pack.

Your bow looks really kewl, Gangrene! Last night, I picked up a Longbow for theHunter Classic and I noticed a Recurve Bow in the store that reminds me of the one you own, so maybe the Devs will eventually add a bow like your bow in COTW.

That is a 3 piece take down Gangrene. Not really what we are talking about. It not traditional, and is modern compensate.
Don’t get me wrong, that’s a sex and dangerous looking bow dude, and that will certainly do the job at 60lbs.
Do you have pictures of the long bow version?
And yes the dev's will very likely add a 3 piece or as in Classic One piece recurve. Like the one you own.
I think this times, they should also make the stabilizers, and sights that can be attached to those types of bows. Give the players options on how many bells and whistles the players can add to the bow.

But since we’re asking the dev’s to make our bow :D here’s mine hehe
Also a composite.

Thanks Bad Bunny! It would be cool to have my bow actually in the game, talk about immersion!

Kaned Dragon: Cool bow, is that a self bow? Mine's a "Trad bow", but yours is a straight up primitive. I think that's how it's classified these days. Eventually I'd like to get a primitive bow. I've been shooting recurves and longbows for about a year since I've taken it "seriously". I shot some as a teen, but that was completely unstructured with a cheap bow. I like the difficulty, and personal growth, of a trad bow... no sights, stabilizers, etc... straight off the shelf with my bear hair shelf material. Compounds just seem like easy mode. I'm going to try hunting with my bow this year with 40 lb. limbs, which can pretty much take down anything in the lower 48. I ordered my hunting / target arrows a week and a half ago. So, once I'm comfortable with this bow and am ready to take to the next level I'll probably go down to something more like a self bow. I eventually want to try stalking with moccasins in a very primitive style. Check out Ryan Gill on YouTube to see what I'm talking about there. He's taking down elk with his own stone tips from his self bow...

My bow does contain modern materials and is take down(for travel), but it's still a "trad" bow and a "bare" bow. FYI, my bow is not tapped / drilled to add stabilizers, sights, plungers, etc... it's as is. if you want to mount a quiver you'll have to get a strap on... and there are some nice leather ones. It won't be screw mounted though. For right now I like the old style but with the "modern" convenience of having a shelf.

Pictures of the longbow version... Hope this link works to embed the pic in the reply. If you want I can put some videos on YouTube.

Shoot twig, score big! A plug for them. A great small family run operation with awesome customer service.

Also read the reviews of this bow on that site. I was going to purchase something else, but I eventually changed my mind after talking to a few people and reading those reviews.

Thanks man. No I didn’t make it.
I’ve inquired about learning and making one. But it’s take a long time, and you need to have the time to do it. I forgot the name of the guy who made my one. I need to ask my old archery supplier.

Technically mines not a true longbow. Although most longbow archers will say a longbow is just a long bow haha.
From what I've learnt around these parts. A true longbow, has to be made, with only natural materials, no modern glues or vanishes. One single piece of wood. The ones I’ve seen are kind of bent and lumpy. As they don’t sand them down to a fine finish. Sometimes there are Burls, the clumps of grain that turn into knots within the wood. And they can’t shave them down, as it might compromise the wood. They get it as close to the shape as they can with an axe and shaving tools, Then there’s the time need to let the Bow settle on a rig, to get the shape. Can take a few months from what I got told.
This guys, has a great video showing how he does it.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=68L7n5Shd3I

Mines, a composite, it's made from layers of different wood glues together with epoxy.
It's got some Yew tree in there some American Oak some other woods I can’t remember atm. That Snake skin grib, feels so good. But its wearing out where my thumb is.
Real horn on both end's. Truly one of a kinda.
It's shoots better than any other bow I've tried. It's only a 35 lbs pull, but somehow the arrows make a surprising impact.

I got a 3 piece take down recurve, but it's real cheap, noisy and doesn't shot well.
I used to have a flat bow, like the one in classic, but unfortunately it broke from old age and heavy use.
Died doing what it loved doing.

I got into archery through school. Some of my teachers practised it.
You'd think archery was still alive and well in the UK, but traditional field archery a hidden hobby.
Target archery is more popular.
We can't hunt with bows in the UK, at least not officially. They outlawed it in the 1960's.
And no one bothered with archery really, football won.
So you have to go looking or know who to go to.

Good to hear you like it bare ;-) That bow, look really good. That staining on the wood and the grain. Damn fine craftsmanship :D Do you have a favourite out of the two, do you have another one going on the side too ;-)

What type of arrows do you use. Also curious about the arrow heads you’ve chosen. I’m so used to target arrow heads.

I've heard a 40lbs pull is really all that needed. 60lbs are for big game. It's the arrow head that makes the difference apparently.

I checked out the Ryan Gill vids. Good locations and good shot. Lovely bow and those arrow head. Ouchy.
I watched the Idaho vid, and the first thing I noticed was how loud that wind is. Also liked that he, didn’t just go for the shot.
But now I want some goats to carry my stuff around haha

Even though I do traditional archery, I’m okay with all the modern tech. Each to there own. But it’s more gratifying getting that hit without a scope and knowing you ZEN’d it :)

And As I mentioned above, finding a primitive bow, that is good enough to really shoot accurately with are hard to find.
Right now I can’t even afford new arrows. If I do get some money together I want to get this one. Lever action bow. Looks like a recurve had a baby with a compound.
http://www.merlinarchery.co.uk/oneida-eagle-bows-stock-models.html

If I even got the chance to hunt with a bow, I’d definitely want a compound with a sight. But it would be my first time, so I wouldn’t want to risk making a bad shot on my first hunt.

I do wander if I’d use a quiver or just carry 3 arrows somehow.

Just getting one animal in rl, seems very hard, so can’t see myself needing a quiver full of arrows.

I know one guy from my archery club, who created a unique quiver. He got a tube of PVC about 2 inches in diameter and a meter long. He cut a square whole in the side at the bottom, and made a cover for the whole. In essence he created a sealed quiver. Kept his arrows dry and clean. Swung over the shoulder.

Good luck with your hunt dude. May your arrows fly straight to true :)

Here’s a few more pics, better quality. You can see how dirty the lower horn loop holder is, from all the times I've rested it on the ground. Also can check out the worn out snake skin.
