"Ethical Virtual Hunting" An amusing paradox, or a serious conception?
An amusing anecdote from the games CEO. What do we make of this, now that the game has "endangered" wild life? (Personally, I think it's just all pixels...)

"We've aimed to go for ethical hunting. Fox hunting will never be part of our game, and we're staying away from endangered or extinct species."
You can do all of thee above.

Other amusing statements...
"Instead, Holfve tells me that with theHunter: Call of the Wild and its forebears, the development team always strives for 'ethical hunting' and going to great lengths to ensure the games cannot be misconstrued as glorifying the slaughter of animals."

"You will never see screenshots where players are hunting Cecil the Lion. That's not the type of game this is."

"Limiting players to the appropriate weapons is the key, says Holfve. "We applied that in theHunter Classic years ago. (You can't use an overpowered gun to shoot a rabbit), for example, or use a (fine calibre weapon to shoot a bear or moose in a way that would just injure it [dragging out its suffering].) We also award the player with better scores for a clean hit, rather than just taking a wild shot at their target."

Not exactly true, as you can shoot bears with low caliber ammunition and watch it bleed to death.

In fairness to the devs, I feel that they've done good work re the importance of achieving a clean kill. If you don't want to have to go crashing through the undergrowth looking for a deer you've only just clipped. Shot placement and the set up that goes to make that happen has been worked out really well.

I get what you're saying..."it's all just pixels"... and what you say is true. I guess a player can just wander round shooting anything and everything in the ear for fun but I'd suggest that most of us don't because you don't get rewards for bad shooting (skills/perks, XP, trophies, dosh, etc.).

All in all, 'ethical hunting' is a reality in the game and should be a reality for real life hunters. If you catch all the pigs on the mountainside on the first day, then you end up with zero pigs very quickly. I would also suggest that nobody who hunts wants to cause misery along with death....unless they've got something wrong in the head !

Try hunting deer at night .. or even going into the woods with a light in some states and you'll be sent to gulag. Bag limits? hah!

Here, about the only thing you can hunt at night with lighting is hogs and varmints. You may not go to jail for jack lighting deer (night hunting with lights) but you get a nice hefty fine. The deer you shot gets confiscated. They can also take your weapon, ammo and even your vehicle if they wanted to really get nasty. That nice ATV on the trailer hooked to your truck? Yeah...it's hooked to the truck so you lose that too if they decide to impound your truck.

We used to have a hunting/farm in WV we'd visit from late oct to dec but the poaching, when we weren't there became so bad we eventually sold the place. the SADDEST part was the a-holes weren't even poaching for meat (which I kind of git it in a very poor state) BUT THEY were shooting bucks and taking the antlers and leaving the rest of the carcass ! We found so many whitetail along side the road with that were scalped.. sometimes with just the back straps cut out.. it just became a disgusting mess that really ruined a lot of my childhood memories..

These morons need a good dose of karma.....Hopefully they'll get it where it hurts...
As for the "ethical shooting" of animals in game? To my thinking it's "unethical" to reward a player for using a weapon that cannot take a particular animal down efficiently and quickly. Using a bow with 6oo grn arrows to take down a black bear quickly and you get punished for it by being denied your integrity bonus.... Where's the ethics in that I wonder? Having to use under powered rifles? Where's the ethics in that??
Keep out of "Politically Correct" politics is my advice to developers. It rots your brain cells and is a disease that disables peoples rational and common sense thinking processes.
It's a damn game after all said and done that doesn't turn those of us with a brain into mass killers of Bambis and Thumpers.....or Cecils of the world....
Anyone ever give any thoughts to how many victims "Cecil" probably dispatched in his life? :steamfacepalm:

I just want to clarify that I'm in no way trolling. Only that I find some comments amusing enough to warrant discussion, even this interview can be searched by anyone, any time. If anything I praise the developers going against their own words and not guilt tripping themselves into falling for extreme Politically Correct Politics. I can see the reason why some people would protest about the killings of living endangered species, but don't see why the same would apply to digital representations. (Not even perfect representations at that!) You can argue that some people can never be satisfied with just the removal of controversial content. Once you give them a foot, they'll take the whole leg too and would want the complete removal of your game off the market. These vocal minorities get triggered easily and are liable to even go after fictional characters like Elmer Fudd, (even though it's a joke character for kids to laugh at.)

I hope this is indication for future content that devs won't simply bow down to extreme social justice politics, just to appease a few percentage of people who won't even play their games in the first place and hopefully we get Elephants and Rhinos and maybe even Gorilla's as future DLC.

I used to hunt with dogs on a lamp but I'd never even want to go hunting with a gun at night unless it was a very controlled environment. Dawn and Dusk are always my favourite times for hunting...failing that moonrise and moonset are also good, especially if you are fishing.

As to your other post....man that's just crap...a very sad scenario !!! I fully agree with you. When I say "hunters" I mean just that. I don't mean killer breadheads with guns.

here we call those city, or California hunters. most of the time you see a story in the paper or on the news for poaching or wanton waste around here it's from hunters from one of the cities, or California.

I think the dev's have done a good job keeping the game ethical so far.

WV is actually the only state where you are not allowed to "posses a shed" that is not matched to a tagged deer -- bc people were killing and collecting/selling horns online and if they got caught they would say they found them in the woods. Last time I hunted WV you could up 8-12 deer permits bc they are so overpopulated. So there's no need to poach deer for food.

This is a computer game. It is already ethical hunting. Nothing gets killed.

If in game I literally tear the legs off a domestic house cat using a vice and my ATV, it is still ethical hunting.

If I find a small child lost in the woods and I hit that child between the eyes with a .300 ... that's still ethical hunting.

And should I have a way to set fire to the forests and burn all the animals alive ... still ethical hunting.

If I am quenching my blood lust on a computer game and real life bunnies and deer are going about their business unmolested by me ... that's as ethical as it gets.

I couldn't agree more....We all know there are some kn*bheads out there with little or no brain cells, but I do get a little miffed when others try to infer that we're all somehow "mass murderers" because we're not afraid of weapons?? Still, I can see why the Devs would want to tone it down a little for the market and I don't mind as long as it doesn't go too far along the "appeasement path" like every other thing appears to have gone these days...
As long as they try and fix the issues in the game I'll be a happy chappie....
As for being ethical? That's me to a tee.... I would never leave my victims to suffer....lol :steamhappy:
