// Spooking Animals by just walking around?
It is really annoying that I walk around the map, NOT running, normal walking, and dont find any animals - and then from time to time I get the message that an animal is "running away / flees" because of noise. Alltough it is OVER 150m away. HOW? I mean, what is expected? shall I crouch, inch by inch in slow motion for hours just not to scare the animals? And that I reach them thousand years later?
I understand that running scares near animals, but WALKING scares them at range OVER 150m? This way I will never meet them.

Am I missing anything or how you guys do it?

I'm relatively new to the game also but I've had good success even if I tromp through the forest lol.. sure I'll spook animals and they'll run.. but soon you will start to identify their needs areas.. once you have found these areas, pay attention to the map indicators that say for example "need area 4:00 to 8:00"... in this case, wake up early, head to that area and try to be downwind.. set up in a spot that is around 100-200 yards away.. if you can find a hill better.. just wait.. and wait..
and wait..
and wait..
they WILL come..
Also turn off the hunter HUD (the one with all the icons showing wind and your heart etc.) and the HUD map indicators.. this way your screen will be completely clean.
You can look at the map for spotted objects and you will still get the indicators from where a noise occurred.
You don't need the wind thing.. just look at the debris flying around it is very obvious..
Also (I think it was a DLC but not sure) I got the small portable blinds.. sit in one of those for a long time and animals will come around.
I've had times where I ran up a hill and looked way down and saw sleeping elk.. if I got too close they ran.. but if I snuck up to within about 150 yards.. they stayed..
Anyway, enjoy that time where you have to sneak and/or wait. Enjoy the scenery.
This game is not good if you want to score big kills very fast.
Hope this helps!

When i played this game i noticed that parks do start with high animal population and it is actually beautiful experience, but after some time population seems to go very low even when you haven't killed every animal on sight and finding animals becomes very hard. It almost feels like there is some bug of animals not spawning if you have been shooting at area, even if that area is allready cleared of alarm red paint at map.

Other than that i did find when i was playing this game, i used Vorpx to get this game in my VR headset, you tend to approach animals lot more cautious in VR than flatscreen because you feel when you need to be quiet and crouching, you can estimate distances better and see what is behind those bushes better with 3D just like those animals can see you. I really couldn't find any animals in flatscreen. Too bad vorpx isn't really natural VR experience.

On my opinion spook distance could be altered for VR players as an option, when VR support comes. I am conviced it will come some day.

As I have meanwhile played a lot more hours, I totally agree and have the same feeling. In the beginning there is a lot more animals and is getting very low after some time and doesnt seem to come back.

For me, COTW is simple. Two things to focus on.

One, always stalk in to the wind

Two, walk normally until you hear a warning call. At that point, switch to crouch and move slowly in the direction of the warning call.

I think it's really that simple and works nearly every time, allowing you to get in position for a good shot.

Once you opened up fast travel points around the map, plan out your stalk. Choose a destination, and then fast travel to whichever point will allow you to reach your destination by stalking in to the wind.

Are you understanding the concept of hunting pressure and how areas and animals are affected by it?

When I feel like I'm close to an animal, I crouch then sprint. Holding shift when crouched makes a fast crouch walk, not as fast as walking and not as slow as a normal crouch walk. As I get closer I then stop holding shift, then after a while if needed I go completely prone.

Most the time I am crouch shift walking though.

This really works! I do the same thing :)
