Do the modern guns just suck?
I am using the modern gun pack and i normally use some of the original guns in the game(non dlc) and i have been aiming and shooting the same way. However i never get the kill on the modern weapon even when i see myself hit their side or lung. The other guns would drop them and i am using the right caliber.

The .308 is a rather op weapon and known as the best 4-8 rifle the game offers. The .223 is a little bit weak against class 4 and can struggle against class 3, if you don´t have a good angle. The impact of the .22 is comparable to the Virant. Which rifle did you use, which ammo and which animal did you shoot at?

yeah the .308 zarza is one of the best 4-8 guns in the game. Are you perhaps using the wrong ammo?

You mean between the different .308?

Are you using the polymer tipped or soft-point ammunition?

There are two 30 caliber rifles chambered for the 308 cartridge - the Zarza AR-10 semi-auto and the Olssen (spelling?) bolt-action that comes in the Hunter Power Pack. Other than the action type, I think that those rifles differ a bit in accuracy, weight and recoil parameters.

I am using the zarza ar-10. I have used both but i normally use the polymer tipped one. If there is a specific one i should use with these guns then i will use it. I just don't understand i guess.

No, they don't 'suck'.
But that is just my opinion.

The modern rifles are great because with magazine size of 5 and semi auto the next shot is ready when you need it. The Arzyna 300 magnum is a beast. However, my hunting buddy has turned me on to the malmer 7mm over the zarza 308, because even though the malmer is slower due to its bolt action, it is more versatile as a 4-9 weapon as opposed to the 4-8 class rating of the 308. I can carry 3 rifles covering every animal class, plus a pistol, a bow, scopes for all of them (incl night scope for rifles and rangefinder sight for the bow), 5 callers, scent eliminator, and finally binos - my "everything" loadout. Needs pack mule though. I also have a Grelk loadout to add shotgun to the mix but I think I had to give up the bow rangefinder since the Grelk is a heavy gun and it also needs its own scope. I also have a loadout with the strandberg as well but forgot the deets on that. The Zarza 22 has a slight edge over the Virant in recoil and reload, but you could make the case the Virant is the better choice with 10 in the mag over the Zarza 22's magazine with 5 rounds, however I never use more than 2 or 3 before the animals scatter anyway so for class 1 animals I've opted for the Zarza 22. I will say though, despite liking the malmer 7mm, I will swap it out for the Arzyna 300 if I'm going to focus on class 8 or 9 animals like moose or yaks - they won't run as far from where you landed the vital shot - like when I'm farming moose on the big lake in Medved Taiga. If I'm landing broadside lung shots with the 308, I was chasing them into the woods after shooting them on the lake's edge. Much easier with the Arzyna 300 mag! Actually, I've hunted a lot of Euro Bison with 600gr arrows in the Bearclaw bow - insane penetration, good enough even at 60m, and it'll often skewer them with 4-organ shots at 10 or 20m!

No, the polymer tipped ammunition is generally the optimal choice. Are you taking into account the effective range of the ammunition (150m for class 8 animals)? I generally don't use class 4-8 rifles for class 7-8 species, although the 7mm Magnum rifles and ammo (class 4-9) will bring them down with careful shot placement, even if they do tend to run anywhere from 0 to 150m or so.

Not all class 4-8 rifles and ammunition are created equal, and neither are the ammunition choices in a given caliber - In real life, the 308 Winchester cartridge is basically a shortened version of the 30-06 Springfield - both are classified as 30-caliber, with a 0.308" diameter bullet and a 0.300" rifle bore diameter (land-to-land). Because the 30-06 cartridge case is longer, it can hold more propellant than the 308 cartridge case - all other things being equal ( same barrel lengths, same bullet weight and design), the 30-06 will produce more muzzle energy than the 308, and higher muzzle velocities. Presumably the game reflects this, but we have no way to measure any of this, unlike in Way of the Hunter.

Oh, I agree. My preferred loadout for class 4-9 hunting is the 7mm Malmer Magnum and one of ( a 300 Magnum rifle/ammo or a 338 Magnum rifle). I'll use the 270 or the 6.5mm for 4-6 just to change it up (the 6.5mm is great for Wildebeest (class 6) out to 350m for one shot kills - they do run a short way, but that's okay)

So what is your advice on figuring out the best bullet and what guns that would allow you say 4-8 would actually be good to use on 8? Is this something I just have to do a trial and error on? Also I appreciate the answer
Carstein83 Oct 13, 2024 @ 4:45am
The 4-8 weapons all struggle against class 8, same with both 7mm. The Zarza .308 is the best weapon against classes 4-6. Against classes 7-9 use the Arzyna .300 (or the .300 Magnum Canning or the Tsurugi .338, if you don´t have the High Caliber DLC).

And the poly ammunition is the better choice, as VictoriaHuntress has mentioned.
