Though I do wish we could have multiple hunter profiles.... make one a focus on rifle, another focus on archery, etc. and a way to start fresh if you want -- but not blow away your history and achievements, etc.
The problem, as I see it, is the inevitable (and sad) evolution of the gaming industry. With the transformation from genuine and originally good ideas and competent programmers to the next generation of coders accommodating for the main stream pressure, the result tends to be worse and worse for the "adult" gaming audience. I am sure today's coders are equally competent (or even better, have better tools etc.), but it does not show due to management decisions.
It is harder to make money on a unique long term niche project than squeezing out a game that many will play for a week or two. Revenue is simply higher when following the mainstream and producing weak products. Limited investment and quick return. Except for very rare cases.
I admire EW for sticking with COTW and even The Hunter Classic for this long and I hope we have many years ahead of us with an unaltered game mechanics in COTW. Therefore I do not really look forward to a COTW 2.
Indications of what I just said can be discerned in EW's project "The Angler", which did not turn out great. They failed to stick with the successful concept of The Hunter, even though they have it all in-house. I hope they learn and make comeback as I would also enjoy a fishing game a'la Hunter!
What's next would most certainly involve the things that more capable up to date technology can provide. And should logically consider the things in CoTW that might be improved upon.
However, this genre is not one that many Developers want to tackle because of its complex dynamics and the never-ending inherent criticism.
So in a sense, we who might enjoy the next step in this genre, are really our own worst enemies.
I recall how discussions sounded like prior to the release of WoTH 😂.
It would "kill" CoTW, it would be the "nail in the coffin", nobody "would ever look back on CoTW", "RIP CoTW", it would be "The End of CoTW" and so on. And yet, here we are with 10 000-15 000 still playing CoTW on a daily basis and 212 hanging on to WoTH.
It shows how hard it is (for a developer) to get into, and prevail, in this niche. It also demonstrates the quality and strengths of CoTW. I wish for WoTH to take off (I would like a good alternative to CoTW), but as of today, there is nothing there that pulls me in.
You said it!!!
