Feeling a little cheated - DLC content
So, seeing DLC on special yesterday I took the opportunity to purchase the Silver Ridge Peaks reserve (due to reports that it has more game to see regularly) and the Modern Rifle Pack (mainly to upgrade from the single shot 7mm to the Zarza .308).

Initially I was pleasantly surprised as I immediately saw a large herd of bison, a bear, some turkey and a pronghorn all in the first few minutes. I managed to take down two bison and the bear straight away and really like the .308. Much less recoil and 5 rounds available....nice!

Following the mission storyline to the lookout and then to the second outpost I realised there are a LOT of bison in the area...... they're everywhere. I also realised that with so many bison around something even a bit more powerful than the .308 might be handy at times so I purchased the Yukon reserve mainly to get the .300 Magnum.

When I went to the outpost store I was a bit disappointed to find that even though I've purchased the .300 Magnum with actual money (yeah, it was only a couple of dollars) I still need to spend 70,000 game dollars if I want to use the .300 magnum...... and I only have 65,000 at the moment. I assumed it would be immediately available to me.

So that's my minor rant out of the way.

I will also say, the vegetation in Silver Ridge Peaks appears to be a bit less consistent with parts of far away trees appearing to have a bit of aliasing glitching when moving or turning around and so far there has been more instances of animal calls showing on screen with no sound or having sound and no indicator on the screen and some bison amongst the trees have movement issues. It's nothing game breaking, just a little less refined than I've found Layton Lakes to be.

Yeah, gotta get something bigger because the .308 is class 4-8 and bison are class 9. You'll get dinged for improper caliber when shooting for trophies.

The thing with the DLC weapons has been tossed around for awhile. There have been a few posts complaining that the gear is free and there is nothing to work for...then there are the ones from your point of view. The general consensus is either an on/off toggle or slider so it'll make both sides happy.

Buy the Hunter Power Pack DLC - it has a 338 Magnum bolt action rifle, a 7mm Magnum bolt action rifle, and a 308 bolt action rifle.

The 338 is 7-9, the 7mm is 4-9, and the 308 is 4-8.
The 338 polymer tip ammunition may be locked until you reach a certain XP level and/or rifle score, though

That'll explain why I only got 85% or so for a couple of bison, although so far I've managed to bring them down quickly without having to track them for miles.

As for trophies, I've not bothered to even taxidermize anything yet. Everything I earn from harvests has gone into weapons and other equipment, and at the moment every in-game dollar I have will be going to get the .300 Magnum soon.

Thanks for the info Victoria.
I went with the Yukon to get the .300 Magnum as it is nearly as powerful as the 338 with more accuracy and that DLC was cheaper than the Power Pack plus I get another reserve.
I'm one of those people that only buys games and particularly DLC when it is on special with 50% or more off (yeah, it's only a couple of dollars, but it's something I stick to). Even games that are years old are still infinitely more impressive than anything I had as a youngster and I'm a frugal and patient man.
I'll work with what I've got for a while and if the Power Pack comes up on special again, and I feel I need something even more than the .300 Magnum, I'll pick it up.

YW :)
Oh, that's a valid approach to a lot of things in life.
Good luck and good hunting :)

I purchased all the dlc I was missing some time ago for under $20.00, I never had a problem having to earn enough game cash in order to unlock the best rounds or get the next best rifle...to me it just gave me more purpose to play the game....and I still love the game...I have 1360 hrs into it and its great.......by the way one of my friends has over three times the hrs I have and HE loves it as well... plus nooooo mods!!!!!....mods are lame and for losers as far as I'm concerned....why play the game then....JMO...

Focus on the gear first. You can always save a harvest and do the taxidermy thing with it later. About the only thing I taxidermy is diamonds and the rare fur types unless I really like the way it looks.

With SRP, you can sit in the prebuilt blinds at specific times and farm a half dozen animals at a time. You'll have your $ in no time.

As far as DLC goes, you can get by just fine with the default weapons. They each fill a niche.

The 7mm is single shot, but will cover a huge range of classes 4-9, just aim for the lungs and use polymer bullets. It doesn't really struggle until you get up to water buffalo.

When you need more power, you'll actually do really well with the 454 Rhino pistol.
Unlock that and the pistol scope. Power-wise it's better than most rifles. Good for classes 4-9, multiple shots, and easily takes down any animal in the game including water buffalo and lions. The only down-side is you don't get quite as much range as a rifle.

The only thing stronger than the Rhino is the 470 King from the Vurhunga DLC - and honestly, it's a bad rifle. You can't put a scope on it so iron sites only, limited to 2 rounds, and unlocking the gun and buying bullets are stupidly expensive.

I don't think I've ever gotten so addicted to any game as this, and I LOVE my motorcycle racing games ever since the first MotoGP game in 2000.
I'm still a beginner in COTW at just over 120 hours so far.

That's pretty much what i'm doing.... but have yet to get a diamond anywhere.

Thanks for the tips.
I've avoided blinds, tripods etc so far. I find that on the few occasions I've done the "wait for them to come", they never bloody do and I end up going for a walk and stumble upon a stack of game just around the corner. Ha ha ha.

While I'm chatting here, I've just gotten the backpacks with climbing gear in Silver Ridge Peaks. Will this stuff make more noise and visibility like if I used a backpack for more loadout?

The backpacks will greatly increase your visibility and the noise you make so even the level 1 animals will know you're coming from a mile away. The only time backpacks are really useful is when you're moving around the map and setting up lots of tents or other equipment.

Yeah. Backpacks are bad. There's no real reason to use them unless you're carrying tents out to a remote location. ... I've honestly never used the climbing gear.

The blinds on SRP are those prebuilt shacks. Check the zone times nearby and be in the shack before the animals arrive. You're essentially invisible while you're in the shack.

The detection mechanics in this game are poorly explained. You'll need this if you're wandering around:

I should have been clear that the backpack was not a backpack that I purchased in game but was part of the storyline with climbing gear in it. I was able to pick it up despite having a pretty full loadout.

The story line back pack and will have zero impact on noise level or visibility. It also doesn't add space to your inventory nor will it add to any weight you are carrying.

Thanks Leadmagnet. I dropped off the backpack with the climbing gear and was a bit disappointed that there was no actual rock climbing involved. Ha ha.

I was kind off hoping to at least get to slide down the rope when that one ended.

All quest items take up zero space and have no effect on sight & sound. The fetch and deliver quests get more numerous and the go here & shoot this quests pretty much end as the maps get newer.
