HOW do I increase WALKING SPEED`?
My dude is slow as f - even when "running"

How do I fix that? Are they trying to sell me a damn quad DLC?

Yes, indeed Oct 6, 2024 @ 10:29am
like payday 2 yes ur gonna have to adopt that dlc mindset like ofc its technically not nessecary and especially not for hunting but if u wanna unlock outposts and lookout towers then yes pretty much

Your character slows down on low fps. Check if you run fast looking in the sky.

Is there any way to just up the walking speed in the game files?

Oh ♥♥♥♥, yes, I play on a potato. This helped, thanks!

You can actually measure the speed, by using a long, straight, flat stretch of road, a waypoint marker, and a stopwatch (a real-world one). You can't use the TOD clock because (a) it's only precise to 1 minute, (b) it measures elapsed solar time, not 'physical time' 1 hour of elapsed solar time = 15 minutes of real world time.

Your measurements don't have to be super-precise, so you can assume a typical error of +/- 1 meter for distance, and perhaps +/- 1 to 2 seconds for time

Set up the waypoint marker at 100m away, measure the time it takes to walk that far two or three times, and you can repeat for 200m or 300m if you like.

It may be a question of how we perceive our speed.
I did this sort of thing for Way Of The Hunter over a distance of 500m just to see what the rough numbers are:
Slow walking speed: 2.5 - 3.0 km/hr - for hiking with all that weight over rough terrain, that seems about right.
Jogging Speed: 10.0m- 12.0 km/hr - that's not realistic for hiking - perhaps Army and Marine Special Forces soldiers might?
Running Speed: 18-20 km/hr (what, are we all Ethiopian marathon runners? LOL)

I have a high end system that runs at 80-100 fps in 4K resolution, quite consistently.

I recall that I dis some measurements for COTW - let me see if I can find them.
If not, I'll measure again.

I couldn't find my original measurements. Just as well, as those were on my old computer (well, it was high-end in 2017 LOL)

So, I hopped over to Silver Ridge Peaks, which turned out to be interesting, because it does have those paved roads and uphill/downhill paths.

I picked the main road near the Plains Bison Cabin (the one you go to when first entering that reserve). It is nice and straight, with a noticeable incline, so measured the walking times going uphill and downhill an equal number of times. Combining those cancels out the difference between walking speeds uphill and downhill, if there is any. As my FPS rate varied slightly during this exercise, the repeated measurements probably averaged that out as well.

Average Uphill Time(s) Speed(m/s) Speed(km/hr) Probable Speed Error(m/s)
100.00 m 52.43 1.91 6.87 0.072
125.00 m 64.87 1.93 6.94 0.059
150.00 m 79.17 1.89 6.82 0.048
200.00 m 104.40 1.92 6.90 0.036

Average Downhill Time(s) Speed(m/s) Speed(km/hr) Probable Speed Error(m/s)
100.00 m 50.80 1.97 7.09 0.076
125.00 m 63.00 1.98 7.14 0.062
150.00 m 76.53 1.96 7.06 0.050
200.00 m 101.30 1.97 7.11 0.038

Average Uphill + Downhill Time(s) Speed(m/s) Speed(km/hr) Probable Speed Error(m/s)
100.00 m 51.62 1.94 6.97 0.074
125.00 m 63.93 1.96 7.04 0.060
150.00 m 77.85 1.93 6.94 0.049
200.00 m 102.85 1.94 7.00 0.037

Average Speed 1.94 m/s +/- 0.55 m/s 6.99 km/hr +/- km/hr

So, it looks like the average walking speed on my system is about 7 km/hr - that's a brisk hike, probably a little fast to expect in the back-country with a pack. In rough terrain, 2-3 km/hr would be more likely.

There appears to be a slight difference between uphill and downhill walking speeds, although within the margin of error I can't conclude that this is a real thing - it may be something related to how the observed distance to the waypoint marker is calculated.
It might be fun to go up to Two Fawns and climb those mountains.

You may be able to speed up your frame rates by using the settings. Go to settings and then to the video tab. Scroll down and hold the cursor on each heading, it will tell you if the item is high medium or low resource user. You can adjust each setting to a lower rate and in some cases turn them off completely.
If you have a frame rate counter you can check to see if your changes have made a difference.
If you don't have a Frame rate counter I would suggest you download Fraps and install it on your machine. there are several counters on the web but I use Fraps and find it sufficient for my use. It is a free program but can be upgraded if you so desire.
It says up to windows 7 but I am running it on 10 with no problems.

I've had that frame rate drop happen on my PS4 version of the game on several occasions. Everything will be fine and then for no apparent reason it's like being in slow motion. After a few minutes the frame rate returns to normal. Sometimes I just exit the game and reboot the console, and that 'fixes' the rate.

I've never seen this happen on my PC's though, even the older (by 2024 standards, low end, but still above the game's recommended system configuration) system. Both systems are using Nvidia GPUs and GeForce, so I just let GeForce optimize the game settings first, and then tweak them if I want somewhat better rendering quality. On the old system, that was a real issue - on the new one, not at all.

Unfortunately, COTW is not one of the games GeForce recognises

One other thing you can try is to make sure that you have no other processes that use the screen and your GPU running at the same time as the game. If you are on Windows 10 or 11, you should be able to put the PC into Game Mode, so there won't be much competition for resources

I used to have this problem six years ago, when I ran this on an HD4000, no kidding! :steammocking:
