rifle/ammo for class 9 animals
What is a good rifle to use for buffalo? I would like some suggestions before I spend credits to try. The current one I have that can work on 9's, crochmate lever 45-70 (granted I got the rifle for the lower class animals but hoped it would at least work on class 9) but they shrug the shots off.

Would like suggestions on a rifle or other weapon for these animals as it looks like I will need a dedicated rifle for buffalo .

I use the .338 most of the time.

.470 is expensive but will drop them like flies. Crossbow with 600g arrow is effective too. If you want to be more versatile, then I'd highly recommend .300.

If you don't have any DLC I would suggest the 7mm Magnum with polymer tip bullets, it can just reach out a little further than the .45-70. If you have the Yukon DLC grab the .300 Magnum, that rifle is a beast.

I've settled on the .300 for everything 8 and 9. Never lets me down in situations all of the other compatible rifles have.

.45-70 works. Also makes for a passable reenactment of being a 19th century scumbag settler in the American Midwest.

*blasts 50 buffalo in a day* "mmm backstraps!"
I have been using the .300 and that is working very well. My issue with the .45-70 was if my aim was off I was in charging distance as the rifle is less effective the further out you are. I play on many different maps and I am still opening them up so I have yet to set up tents and tripods yet so want something to keep me out of being trampled while I unlock the outposts.

My fav is the .338. Solid trajectory even at distance.

I tend to use either the .300 or 600gr arrows from the bow, depending on the map.

What I use to keep myself from getting mauled by agressive animals is to just carry a tripod with me....just toss it down right quick when they're charging at you and you can shoot them from safety

I've never found charging animals to be terribly dangerous... due to the way their AI works, it seems like you can avoid getting hit by them pretty reliably just by strafing continually. I had to literally crawl into the middle of a bison herd for a couple of the more annoying Hirschfelden quests and then crabwalk away very quickly to avoid getting hit by angry bison after I'd shot one of them.

I usually take them from short range with 12G slugs or 45-70

But for long range I use the .300 or .338, depending on which one i have on hand at the time

Obviously .470 is a choice weapon as well for them but I don't find it as enjoyable (probably because I used it so much in the early days)

The .300 works, but only if you hit the brain, heart, or the lungs pretty much perpendicular from the side (or from the front). A bit of an angle from the side, and it might not reach the lung.
Personally, despite it being normally quite easy to sidestep them, I'm still getting nervous when getting attacked and I'm not that good a shot in those situations, especially if more than one come at me in difficult terrain. Didn't get a vital often enough or they kept going for quite a while that I got the .470. Using that or the bow with 600 gr. arrows now. Will ultimately settle for just the bow, as the .470 is heavy, but for now I quite enjoy bringing them down with it.
