Tips for using Callers
Are there any tips for how frequently and best use callers? Is there an effective range? I've been camped in my blind for about an hour with a red deer walking a wide perimeter around the watering hole. It's been calling out a mating call and I've been replying with my caller but it hasn't come any closer. Wind has been in my favor for the majority of it. What should I be doing?

Under ideal conditions most callers have an attraction value of 40% that lasts for 90 seconds. Effective range is about 200 meters (500 meters for geese). Technically there is no such thing as over calling in this game. In my experience if an animal has not responded to a caller within 15 game min then it's not going to do so. Some species are more responsive to callers than others and the higher the degree of difficulty an animal has the less likely it will respond to a caller.

Animals, as a rule, that are drinking or eating are less likely to leave the bar or dinner table and respond to a caller than those that are traveling. Animals that have been disturbed by your noise, scent or visibility that are 100 meters or more away from you might issue a mating vocal rather than a warning vocal. I view mating calls coming from downwind as the animal telling me they are aware of my presence but are too far away for them to get overly excited about it. In short, I've been busted and once I've been busted it's time to move on.

Geese, black or white tail deer, roe and fallow deer respond more readily to a caller than other species with the young and stupid does leading the way. Predators are the least likely to respond and will invariably attempt to circle downwind of your location while remaining in cover as much as possible.
