Animals, as a rule, that are drinking or eating are less likely to leave the bar or dinner table and respond to a caller than those that are traveling. Animals that have been disturbed by your noise, scent or visibility that are 100 meters or more away from you might issue a mating vocal rather than a warning vocal. I view mating calls coming from downwind as the animal telling me they are aware of my presence but are too far away for them to get overly excited about it. In short, I've been busted and once I've been busted it's time to move on.
Geese, black or white tail deer, roe and fallow deer respond more readily to a caller than other species with the young and stupid does leading the way. Predators are the least likely to respond and will invariably attempt to circle downwind of your location while remaining in cover as much as possible.
