My favorite pistol is the Rhino .454. It's a base game weapon that's good for classes 4 to 9 and is a good backup weapon for when you're hunting things like cape buffalo or crocodiles. If you don't have it unlocked yet, then you can use the Sundberg .454 instead since it's just a reskined version of the Rhino that you don't need to to unlock.

The .243 R. Cuomo (Assorted Sidearms Pack) and Jernberg .45-70 (High Caliber Weapon Pack) are also good choices for handguns. They both use rifle ammo so they have better range that the other handguns and you can also put rifle scopes on them. The only downside is they're both single shot weapons so you better make your shot count.

For shotguns, my 3 favorites are the Cacciatore 12G (base game unlockable), the Couso Model 1897 (Rancho Del Aroyo) and the Strandberg 10SA Executive (High Caliber Weapon Pack). Assuming you're only hunting small game with the shotguns, they're not all that different from one another aside from how many shells they can hold. Just use whichever one you like the most.

thank you for recommending all these weps, sadly I have none of these dlcs so I have to satisfiy myself with vanilla weapons
get the m1 veteran, the drilling shotgun and the colt/glock....you are all covered on all maps. infact the drill. shotgun covers them all.

Really all the handguns have their uses. But for base game weapons, the .454 was mentioned and it’s the best.

However, a weapon nobody mentions, I think the .44 Magnum is one of the most underrated weapons in the game. It covers classes 3-8, so most of the species in the entire game, it has lots of penetration and hits hard so even class 8 species like moose can be killed quickly with it, it holds 6 shots, and it looks great.

Not wrong. I hunt with my Ruger Blackhawk.44 single action with 10 inch barrel, and its been a blast taking out many a whitetail. But i have to say, the .454 cant not be beat neither in game. I have dropped more big animals in 1 shot then when using a rifle. They drop instantly with the .454 and the .44.

Shotguns are basically only good for small game imo. Fowl and bunnies. I use the g12 pumpgun for as many fast shots as possible if you scare some ducks or quail.

Why use slug if you can use a rifle or handgun, Use a shotgun for "power" in the game does not really make sense imo.

The Rhino is great especially with the hard cast 100 pent. power.

For shotguns you will usually be fowling, in which case you either just want the most powerful shotgun possible or the largest magazine possible. For the handgun/pistol it just comes down to class; they're basically just rifles with higher capacities and much shorter range.

Everyone will say Cacciatore 12G is the best shotgun, and they're correct, because it has the largest magazine.

Annoyingly, handguns don't cover class 1 animals unless you have paid DLC, but if you have Weapon Pack 2 then all you need is the 410/45 Colt and the Rhino 454 for all applications.
