Anyone using buckshot and slugs?
Anyone using buckshot and slugs?

I have seen tons of videos on YouTube how other players get kills with rifles of all sorts but rarely see anyone using shotguns and buckshot ammo to hunt actual bucks, deers and such.

I did use it a few times now and it always worked amazingly well especially when waiting for your prey on the right place on a tripod or something like that. Same goes for me when using slugs on larger prey, just powerful.

Is there any specific reason why shotguns don't get too much attention in this game or am I just mistaken?

only use shotguns for geese credit farming and missions that require the different types of round as SG's aren't much use otherwise

No, I only use Cacciatore for geese and sometimes for achievements.

I was using it all the time until the last update broke the weapon sounds. Shotguns are difficult to use for many because you have to hunt closer and calculate the bullet drop. Buckshot is another thing, it can sometimes kill fast, but most of the time it doesn't give us harvest check and can't penetrate vital organs like 350g arrows so ı hate to use it.
here good example of buckshot penetration:

and my farthest vital organ shot with slug :D

Yes true, it is kind of broken but getting animals close and guaranteed kills is still a thing especially when I use slug. Saved me quite a few times.

i have shot roes moose bear blacktail and whitetail mouflon and wolfs with the shotguns deer do run i have yet to try on a boar could u show me where u hit the shot and how far was it? and what species of deer deer can be class 3,4 and 6 so 3s can drop quicker and 6s take awhile to drop

I've tried buckshot several times, but found it to be near useless, so I don't use it anymore. I don't mind a challenge, but I might as well have used throwing spears instead of buckshot! :D Until it is made useful I don't see a reason to ever use it. (I prefer accurate weapons anyway)
I've used slugs quite a bit, mostly with the Drillinger, but one of the patches since the summer of 2020 (or there about) made the scope of the Drillinger misalinged, so I don't use it anymore. It was fun hunting class 4 and 5 animals with those heavy 16 ga slugs. On class 6 they were already a bit too weak (Red Deer). Overall I found slugs fun, due to its limitations, but other than that there is little reason to use them. Rifle > handgun > bow > shotgun.

Hi,

I hit the boar in it's flanks (lungs) at like 20-30 meters (I never hunt further than 70 m with any buckshot shotgun).

Class, no idea. I never really look at the classes so much as it does not bother me.

Surprises me..what I shoot usually goes down very quickly or almost immediate when using buckshot.

What do you think about 20 gauge ?

Shotgun buckshot penetration is a much discussed topic on these forums. Buckshot ingame is not as deadly as buckshot irl, but it really cant be, because it would make the shotgun ingame way to overpowered. I *love* buckshot hunting in Cotw. It's a bit unpredictable, and when you make nice broadside contact, the shot shreds. I think buckshot penetration of all gauges should be increased by 10-20% to be perfect. Unlocking the shotgun scope is very satisfying. Slugs are wonderful short range, but suck over 75m imo.

Deadly...

talking about deadly..I had it happen again.

I was hunting a bison. After emptying exactly 4 clips of 357. Magnum on a bison of which most hits were in to his spine, head, heart, lungs (as he was standing right next to my tripod and came several times) then once I run out of ammo shooting around 3 mags of my small 22.lr at him from a distance of 3 meters (and yes at this distance even 22 lr gets quite dangerous) the animal eventually run away and disappeared..... This feels like some serious arcade rubbish and I am starting to get frustrated about the lack of damage weapons deal in this game EVEN IF I hit the so called lethal spots.

Not sure what these animals are made of, but their body seems to be from titanium or steel.

They can just take way too many hits from large caliber weapons that would with one soft-point even blow a football sized hole through your intestines..... No way.

I hope they are really going to fix this or allow players who want some realism and don't care about these silly class systems in-game to activate some kind of realism mode or what not.

I know I am referring to this game a lot but Deer Hunter 3 did a very nice job, it always felt kind of real.

Anyways...eventually I switched to the M1 Garand (No clue what they call it in-game only know its real name) and even though its more alright, I can blow my whole clip in to a Pronghorn and still end up chasing it for like 500 meters even though I clearly saw how I hit the chest.

I think a lot of people who play this game have never seen some of these animals.
Have you ever traveled through the Dakotas and seen bison herds running full bore? It makes the earth shake. A bison is not like a heavy human. Its more like a small car. Muscle tissue in animals like bison, is not at all like tissue in even the strongest humans. It is much more dense. You did not hit it in the heart, spine or lungs or it would have gone down. So you just blasted a small ford truck with .357 and .22 rounds. People can quite easily survive .22 rounds to the body at 3-4 meters, Tupac survived 8 of em from that distance...

I have not been hunting in the U.S but I have been hunting in Africa a few times as well as Siberia.

I shot bears, elefants and other large game.

If you claim a bison can take this many shots at " center mass " from such a short distance, then you very obviously underestimate the power of such calibers.

An in regards to hunting bisons, there are plenty of youtube videos where they get put down with only one shot by using normal hunting calibers and even with bows and crossbows.

Not sure what you are trying to tell me here in regards to the 22 lr as you can technically survive almsot every caliber to the body, there are people who even have survived a 50 cal and a collegue of mine has survived around 9 hits from an AK47 to his chest and is now a bodybuilder having no physical issues I know of.

What I am saying is, it happens way too often in this game that I hit very obviously lethal parts of an animals body but it just won't go down. This is clearly an issue with the game not with me and I am not the only one on here who has noticed this.

They need to fix this, asap or at least give us a realism option for players who dislike the arcade gameplay.

I see what you are saying, but don't tell someone who is hunting in Africa and Siberia regularly and has also unfortunately seen what firearms can do during service time in the military, that a bloody Bison can handle getting hit with a 357. at such distance this many times in to the body, hell people are using this kind of sidearm for exactly that, to defend against grizzly bears and everything big and dangerous you can encounter.

I live in Austria so I only carry a 9 mm on the job, but the calibers we are talking about are capable of a lot more.

PS: You seem to have never seen what 22 lr can do, if you have to opportunity, go for your nearest shooting range or woods and shoot different kinds of material and some heavy meat chunks and see what it is capable of. People always underestimate 22 lr but don't understand that it is quite a penetrative round that will KILL when it hits major arteries or organs, it's not a toy caliber as people seem to think. There is even a guy on YouTube who hunts deer with 22 lr.
