I enjoy both solo and multiplayer sessions. Both have their advantages.
Ps.
I only hunt with close friends, never in a public session that anyone can join.
I'm kinda new to the game, and still learning a few things .. but .. I got three copies of the game to play over the holidays together with my kids .. one of them was in love with the game and requested the game for his Birthday Present .. the other brother followed .. and so here we are, a family participation event for the holidays in co-op .. so .. IF there is a way to play on LAN with my kids in a true co-op where you can spot for each other and help each other without EVERYTHING being a competition I'd like to know how to set that up ..
(1) Yes you can play on the same maps ..
(2) You can't continue the Solo Quests as a group on multi-player ..
(3) .. and I am not sure if anything you do in the multi-player mode counts toward daily/weekly/community challenges .. we just have not gotten that far into the game yet.
(4) Red-Zones (Hunting Pressure) can pop up REALLY quick and pretty much shut down large areas of the map with three folks all shooting in the same area.
(5) As far as "spooking" game it does not take a lot of real-estate (tracking distance) to re-locate game, you just have to deal with the "Hunting Pressure" as I mentioned already.
.. we all enjoy running around on the maps on ATVs to unlock the POIs for some quick EXP .. but after that there's no real co-op other than a whole list of competition setting challenges the "host" can set ..
I'm gonna bet on "open" servers that this one is an issue .. Whoever spots a target first blocks anyone else from shooting ("invalid target") .. for me, with two hyper-competitive kids, this just turns ugly pretty quick .. lol .. as someone already mentioned, I am certain this happens on other servers.
My apologies for being so long-winded .. just over-sharing some observations my kids and I have experienced ..
