For the 1 in 100 cases when the bloodhound comes in handy because of a botched shot and messy tracks, I probably decide to head to a tent and switch dogs. But after, if I don't switch back, I'm walking, open to upland bird chances, and then get annoyed with myself for not putting the lab back in place.
So yes, it does something different and special, for my hunting habits anyway.
The lab is a retriever and not a tracker. The 2 dogs do different jobs. As mentioned in the thread above, the lab will fetch small game such as birds and rabbits and bring them back to the blind so that you don't have to leave cover. That's it's job like the hound tracks.
I haven't tried it yet but if it works half as well as the bloodhound, it will be a nice tool for small game hunting. But again, it does a different job than the hound and people who like bird hunting probably like the lab.
1). Tracking when I mess up a shot in an area where there are just tracks upon tracks upon tracks upon tracks. While I would be there for quite a while trying to sort out just where the animal tried to run off too (as the game doesn't always load in tracks correctly when there is a mess of tracks crisis crossing over one another.) The bloodhound will hone in on the animal.
2) I have the upgrade where the bloodhound will protect me from animal attacks. I love it when I am sneaking though an area and something like a wolf or cape buffalo sneaks up on me instead. The dog will alert me and block a charge so I can pull out my gun and defend myself without being knocked out.
