Why do you have a problem with the large herds? Does it affect your system performance?
I recently posted about a herd of does becoming confused about what they should do after killing the stag in their herd. Usually in these herds there is one animal that is programmed to follow a daily pathway consisting of waypoints/need zones, and the rest of the herd is programmed to follow that lead animal. This assigned leader can be a male or female, and once it's killed another is usually programmed with its same pathway, possibly altered somewhat depending on particular dynamics of the hunting event, for example, hunting pressure applied.
My assumption is that there was a lapse in the reprogramming of a new lead animal for the herd to follow.
Is there some recent bug causing this? I haven't played enough recently to jump to any conclusion.
Another thing to watch for is when a spawn point gets piled up on after a lead animal spawns there and gets stuck in a terrain glitch and can't move any further. Every animal that spawns there afterward can also be stuck there, or all animals programmed to follow the stuck lead animal will just hang there confused about where to go.
This can put entire herds out of play on a map until that stuck animal is killed, and another is assigned.
However, this glitch was supposedly resolved long ago.
