This happened during my very first game, back in Dec 2021 or early January 2022.
I was in Yukon Valley at the time, and after purchasing the 300 Canning Magnum, I thought it would be a good time to take it out for a Bison Hunt.
So, armed with the 300 Canning/Argus Scope (I was expecting a long range shot), a-hunting we will go!
I started from an outpost cabin near the center of the map, where I had spotted bison to the northeast a few days previously. Knowing that a need zone was up in that area, and the time they would be there, I started out early in the morning, hoping to get into a good shooting position before the bison arrived. Well, as I'm making my way to the area, I spotted the herd about 300m ahead of me, upwind, heading northeast as well. I continued my stalk, in stealth mode, until they were about 150m away, stopped at the zone.
As I was crouched down in the trees, invisible, trying to get a clear shot at a nice bull, I heard that loud warning blast from directly behind me - nearly jumped out of my skin!
Still crouched, I spun around to see this huge bison bull approaching my position, most likely a straggler trying to catch up to the rest of the herd. Well, he's not happy to see me or smell me, and I could tell that he was getting ready to charge (this was when bison were very aggressive - I-kill-you-for-looking-at-me-crazy). There was nowhere for me to go, and no chance of outrunning this beast, who is now about 5m away.
I did the only thing I could do - I stood my ground, detached the sight from the rifle ( surprised and relieved that I had the presence of mind to do that!), took aim at his chest and fired. He dropped practically at my feet - turned out to be a heart shot. If this had been a real life situation, I would have done the same thing ( like I really have a choice? LOL), but I have no illusions that it would have ended well for me.
This was the most exhilarating moment in the game up to that point, and while I've experienced many more of those since then, there is nothing like the first time one cheats virtual death. That's what I love about this game - never knowing what to expect.
The mallards used to bug out and you'd see a whole flock 2 feet off the ground flapping their wings fleeing and none of them are moving an inch, stuck in position. Twilight zone type of magic. Moment you shoot one they all unbug and fly away.
Or that time I joined a multiplayer lobby and every single animal was a rare fur type and running on the spot stuck in position like the mallards. Left immediately.
However the one I remember bursting out laughing at was one of my first attempts at hunting a lion.
I was new to the map and had only discovered a couple of need zones for them but one was a feeding zone next to a patch of high grass.
Thinking I was beyond clever I decided to lay down in the grass and occasionally pop my head up to see if any lions had arrived.
After several minutes nothing was happening and I was considering getting up and moving elsewhere when a lion found me.
Yup it walked straight up behind me and killed me.
Bought the tripod stand DLC 5 minutes later.

I've also had a water buffalo follow me into an outpost and stomp me to death.

That's probably the most frustrating thing for me.
On too many occasions I'll head off to a need zone with a little time to spare to get a good position under a tree only to find that the dear/moose/bison need to actually pass by my position to get to the need zone. It usually ends with at least one animal being spooked by me and spooking the whole herd or, worse still, trampling me before I even know it's there.
The funniest thing I saw though was in a similar situation, under a tree waiting for deer to show up and I can hear a stack of them behind me. I keep waiting and waiting and eventually turn around to have a look the other side of the tree and see a deer literally drop from the sky to the ground about 50m away.
Was following a hit on a blacktail deer - not a very good hit though, I must confess - but the bloodtrail told me less and less health and of course one follows, but suddenly I hear a bear warning me no far away.
Well, bears can be kind of a threat - so my shote thoughts tell me - that's why I hurried more cautiously to find the poor deer, but arriving at the end of the blood trail right in front of me
there was a "bear eating zone" right on time and the corpse of "1 deer"... oh my dear ...
made a "photostory" out of it with footprints and all, in case any groundkeeper might have some questions, but that ain't much evidence to proof anything but my amazement..
If there ever was a question about a location name: this is not it,
for I call it the "Eaton Place" best episode with Johnny-Raw ;-)
I guess, it's just a coincidence, don't know if the game is written that way,
nonetheless I learned, again, not.to.pull.the.trigger.when.you.are.not.sure.of.the.outcome !!
I left an outpost in the northern sector on the ATV travelling southward.
Shortly after I could hear the thunderous pounding of hooves directly behind me. A huge herd of Wildebeest had chosen to stampede on the same path I was taking across open plain, and as I continued driving they just kept pace and direction with me for quite a way.
It's possible there might have even been two different herds congregated because there definitely seemed to be more than usual.
Of course this was back when the reserve first came out and I think they've reduced those Beastie herds since than for FPS sake.
