this is not true.
The majority of render distance stuff is tied to animals , foliage, map objects/meshes, water and water shaders.
You simply extend the cull distance for each of the things you have linked to your cull options.
This is not difficult nor impactful on anything other than performance which on PC is absolutely controllable. It is quite literally in many cases the change of a number.
But I'm not sure if that dev was knowledgeable with regard to the implementation of individual system options.
They seemed very certain of the inability at the time though.
a 5 second google and there are ways to do it yourself....

Though I would much prefer official support for a render increase.
It was perfectly capable of managing longer distances few years ago...
Just take a look at how low they've set the render distance in the Angler. Looks like a game from 20 years ago.
For what it's worth, Way of the Hunter has much better view distance but I still think this game looks better.
I've no issues with my old potatoe whatsoever.
Extremely helpful to spot need zones at larger lakes and such.
Not that I try to take 500m shots or something, but some lakes are more than 420m across and there's where it comes in very helpful.
Try getting that close to a red deer on a Scottish moor. Not happening.
