Not sure just an idea.
Yes, this seems to happen more often now. Either because of other animals getting spooked and telling on you (though I was told in another post that it didn't work that way), or it's just one of those (perhaps more frequent) freak occurrences and you were unlucky.
I agree that small game (and this is being said in several posts) seems to be really skittish/aware/etc. now, but generally, bigger game generally feels (to me anyway) more or less like they've always been.
I'm currently hunting on the new map, and hunting from downwind, using the binoculars often, keeping the running to a minimum, etc., and things are ok.
I find that coming back to CotW after a break requires me to get back into a very specific sort of gaming mindset, and it usually takes me like 12 hours of playtime before I get my CotW "legs" back. Not saying this is your case, just sharing a random thought I guess...
Good luck out there!
If you are going to stalk, get both levels of soft feet and both levels of improvised blind. Soft feet helps reduce the noise you make and improvised blind help reduce your visibility in the brush. I've seen a lot of complaints or comments about how well they work since the new map. It does seem that improvised blind doesn't work as well as it use to.
Callers do have a range and that could be part of the problem you are having. I have, for me anyway, noticed that animals actively using a need zone tend to ignore callers. If you are calling any of the predators, remember that they tend to circle down wind as they come in and that they come in slowly so it is a big waiting game to get them.
