Some of the DLCs are really worth it, but so is the base game. If you enjoy the concept of the game the base game will give you some hundred hours of fun, until you get bored and move on to the first DLCs.

This game is gaming crack. It does not matter how much you own of this game, all the content is superb and each map has endless entertainment. It's all I play now and I have over 1000 games on Steam. I pretty much deleted my wish list games after a week on this game. I realize I will play little else now. I bought it when it came out, and stupidly only got into it recently. Wish I had not wasted my time on other games and logged in the hours needed to see and do everything in this game. Merry Christmas!

This game has the uncanny ability to eat up your free time. I can't imagine how people with families are managing.

The base game contains two reserves which by themselves can provide dozens, maybe hundreds of hours of gameplay. There are 18 species for you to hunt, a bunch of different gear (rifles, handguns, bows, shotguns, sights and lures), missions and side-missions, collectibles, achievements and leveling, with skills and perks to choose from. There is also multiplayer if you're into that.

While you've expressed not being interested in other DLC, the general consensus is that the "Tent & Groundblind DLC" is a good quality-of-life to have because it allows you plonk down tents who act as portable outposts; where you can rest, change gear and teleport to whenever you want. And the groundblinds can come in handy for missions that require you hunt an animal in a specific zone with a groundblind, as you can place them in more strategic locations.

The second most recommended DLC is the ATV because it allows you travel much faster, in particular to unlock the outposts and points of interest around the map. The caveat being their noise scares animals in a large radius around them.

(That being said, these are optional and you can absolutely play and enjoy the base game has is.)

Be aware that this game was designed in a way that, when you buy it, it downloads and installs all the content available at the moment (reserves and dlcs included) but you will only have access to the ones you've purchased, with the exception of multiplayer, where you gain access to all content the host has. This is also why every patch that comes is usually several GBs, as it has to re-download the entire game again to implement the changes. It's something to consider if you've got limited data or bandwidth.

TL;DR: If you enjoy semi-realistic, semi-arcade hunting games then COTW is absolutely worth it IMO, even just the base game. But be aware that patches for this game tend to be quite large.

LOL Yup. Thank God I have no kids and my wife is a gamer. She forgives me.

This game was in really, really rough shape for the first few years of its life cycle. Now definitely the best time to 'get started,' although it's still got plenty of warts.

Yeah .. it's worth it and better in some ways because it's less confusing ... I have soo many gun types and different ammo types to scroll through it took ages to figure it out. ... also I am still playing map 1 .. .despite owning all the others .. and the stock guns are what I was using for ages anyway.

It's so refreshing to hear that someone else is able to appreciate CoTW the same way I do, and the way it deserves to be enjoyed.

IMO, it is hands down THE best hunting game on the market!

The base game contains two reserves, Layton Lakes and Herschenfeld, which many players will consider two of the best. So you can readily enjoy the fullest aspects of CoTW playing only these two reserves.

I must say that there are often considerable discounts available for packages of various DLCs and even the entirety. You may have some personal reasons for not wanting to consider these immediately, and if so, you can always take advantage of them after trying out the base game alone, BUT, having said that, you will miss out on some very specific benefits that add immensely to it's enjoyment. As with many games, there is a brief starting progression which can be greatly eased by specific DLCs.

So, yes you will thoroughly enjoy the base game alone, and as Tiger pointed out, you will undoubtedly later regret not having tried out some of the extras.

But the chance to enjoy those will still be available later, so there's really no risk.

This game is designed to simulate, as realistically as possible while remaining enjoyable, the experience of evolving from novice hunter to skilled hunter, and as such will begin with a bit more difficulty which will ease as you progress into a more experienced hunter. But this does not take long at all, and you will be able to learn a great many tactics from this forum, and other media, to assist in this brief starter phase.
