Question about the Great One
So do the great ones appear after a certain number of kills of that animal or could you just randomly run into one?

There is a chance you can just randomly run into one, the same with the diamonds. From what I've seen, there is no set number of kills to get one to spawn. People just start killing all of the high level males and keep farming them in the hopes one bumps to a level higher & spawns a Great One.

There are different theories. Some say, that the chance for a great one to spawn is totally random and at about 0,05 %. That means, you have to shoot 2.000 males in average to get a GO. Nevertheless, there are newer approaches (LadyLegend on yt for example), that claim, that you can influence the spawn by a special kind of herd management - but that includes, that the spawn is not totally random. I don´t know, what is true. I personally - by shooting every male - needed about 3.500 kills for my Red Deer GO and about 2.000 for the Whitetail GO.

Ladylegend shot her GO moose yesterday how long was the update out not very long, and other ccs also gotten theirs, and people who hunt out a tent and do
time resets have a better chance Its a numbers game. Don't know a single person who hunts In the game while exploring who has one yet, going to take them awhile so be It. I would say making a lot of kills in short order does pay off.
