How to enable friendly fire in multiplayer to teach gun safety
We're thinking about using this game to help teach our kid about gun safety while hunting.

Friendly fire looks to be disabled by default. Don't want him to get the false sense of security that he doesn't have to worry about what is beyond a bush. Don't want him to pull a ♥♥♥♥ Cheney.

Is there a config that would need to be edited?

Turn the PC off and take them to a gun range, you're not going to teach them much about real gun safety in this game or any other.

There is a large difference between being at a gun range and trap shooting than there is hunting. As far as I can tell, your not allow to have people randomly walking around a down range,

Even Ian talked about being shot at while at a gun range, the old people didn't learn.

A gun range can help you learn how to shoot, but that is about the most of it.

But thanks for the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ response - jerk.

Not specifically looking to teach anyone gun safety, but I agree that a friendly-fire toggle for multiplayer would be a fun addition. Hunting with friends is fun but it's a little annoying when they walk in front of you while you're lining up a shot and you get hit with the "invalid target" overlay.
Plus player death is already in the game, both from fall damage and trampling. It doesn't seem that outrageous to add.

Not any more. Now you are "knocked out" and fly to the nearest outpost.

I meant the HP system was in place. Death, Knocked out, whatever you want to call it is just semantics. Mechanically it's very possible and already implemented.

If friendly were to be implemented it should reset the shooter back to the outpost with a fine, while the the victim does not take any damage or ill effects. Otherwise multiplayer will fill up with trolls.
As far as a tool for teaching gun safety?Probably not a good way to learn. I agree with PicSoul: get them out of the house and give them real world, hands-on experience. A basic hunter education course is a good start, and they'll discuss banking shots so you can see where your bullet will stop. Basically, if you can't see the backstop and where it will end, then you don't take the shot. Then take them to your hunting site, present them with hypothetical shots, and have them explain whether or not to take the shot and why. Next they should accompany you (they're still unarmed at this point) while you hunt and think through these things in real-time with the excitement of seeing the animal in person. It's one thing to know you shouldn't take a shot in theory, but another to practice restraint when that buck you've watched on the trail cam for the past 3 years shows up and presents a skyline shot. Be patient and wait for a safe opportunity, then be desicive and quick when it presents.
Glad your teaching them to hunt and to do so safely. Good luck 🙂

So, your idea is to make the game another clone of Counter Strike?

I'm in.

Hilarious! Instead of making up some weird story why don't you just ask why you can't
shoot other players?
Teaching kids "gun safety"? Hilarious champ!

friendly fire is not a thing in multiplayer ? bummer
check nexus mods web site , maybe something is there to work around the lack of friendly fire

one lesson could be :
- just shoot what you see :)

there is an achievement that is given when you shoot an animal that is not visible , i will never get that and i dont even understand why that achievement is a thing in the game ...
