The best class 7-9 rifle is the .300, it comes with the Yukon reserve and is a must go.
Furthermore you need a good class 4-8 weapon, that has more than one shot, the alternatives are the .308 (Modern Rifle Pack), the M1 (Smoking Barrells Weapon Pack) or the .303 (Te Awaroa reserve) - they are all very similiar.
For distance shooting against class 1 animals you either need the .22 LR (Weapon Pack 1) or the .22 H (Mississippi reserve).

The starting weapons are only partly good. The only good ones are the Cacciatore (best shotgun) and the Rino (best handgun). The 7mm is a good all around weapon for classes 4-9, but it has only one shot and struggles against classes 8 and 9. The other starting guns are not good.

so thats it? whats the point of collecting money if the only decent weapons are paid dlc
thats kind of a crappy game design ngl

I don´t want to ruin your game experience, but that´s the truth. I can´t tell you, that weapons like the .338, 45/70 and the .270 are good, because they simply are not. The .338 has inferior accuracy, the .270 inferior punch and the 45/70 inferior range.

There is a new game, Way of the Hunter, but I never tried it out, so can´t say, if it is good. If you don´t want to invest much money into COTW, wait for the next sale, you will probably get Yukon, Smoking Barrells and WP 1 for 10 Euro/Dollar all together (the older DLCs are often reduced up to 50%), that´s cheaper than buying a new game. Until then, hunt with the 7mm.

Devs have to feed their families too. Back in the good old days before DLC, devs would release a game, then either work on a sequel or make a different game. Nowadays, DLC extends the life of a game instead of it being abandoned for a new title. I prefer it that way since it allows you to invest hundreds or thousands of hours in a game instead of tens of hours before having to move on to something new.

Now, all the guns in the base game cover all the animals available to hunt. They all have benefits and drawbacks, and there are DLC and map based guns that certainly outclass the basic stuff, but I used those for months before getting DLC, and they worked fine once I learned the ins and outs of hunting in the game.

I still use the 7mm most of the time, though I got many DLCs. I really like it and there is not even a problem with class 8-9 animals, if you hit the shots right. It also depends on the typ you play. I prefer to get THE one shot and that's where the 7mm fits me.

Those are different skins. The empress looks better imo.

I used to think the .300 couldn't be best. But I've been trying out the .303 sportster and its pretty awesome, and good for lesser class, plus 5 shells.

I'm getting kills at 425 yards by just aiming over the shoulder by a hair. Haven't tested it on range, or at greater distances, but the 300 doesn't have that trajectory. I have to aim over target much more at that range.

Now, the 303 isn't going to hit as hard as the 300 once you get beyond the 350 yard range, but it will still kill.

I find the animals will often drop instantly within 300 yards on a good vital shot, but even when they don't they do not run more than 50 yards or so.

I've been testing it on Red Deer the last few days and I'm impressed.

I had thought the stag's might be too much for it, but so far so good.

I don't expect it to compare with the 300 for moose, but it's my next favorite right now.

Thanks for sharing, Geronimo and others.
