It was a tricky mission after all...
I will persevere and take on the challenge.
I'd be happy to hear other people's clear episodes as well.
I noticed this mission being bugged almost as soon as they fixed Hope #6 on the 27th. Was just waiting to see how long before it got mentioned on the forums.
This is another case of the range of the blacktails being moved messing up a mission. Just like Hope #6. There's no way it was intended for you to lure deer almost 1 km to the blind, which is where my nearest blacktails can be found. I literally checked all hours of the day and blacktails never come near the Rock Formations.
We will have to wait for this mission to be fixed too, but you'd think the devs would've at least checked the other blacktail missions to make sure their required area fell within blacktail range after they made us wait years to fix Hope #6.
Thank you so much for the wonderful information!! It may be fixed like Hope 6 in the future.
I will wait for it.
I was pulling black-tailed deer all the way to the area, but it was impossible to pull 1km.
Does anyone know whether the DLC ground blinds will work?
And yes, the blinds from the DLC do count for mission completion. I pretty much used them exclusively for that purpose.
I know there are players who don't care about the missions, but there are also a large number that do. Typical players who would refer to themselves as "completionists" like myself. I am disappointed the latest maps don't have side missions and you can unlock everything and complete the story quests in a few hours.
Lastly all these threads tend to have someone suggesting you can lure animals over long distances. Have they actually tried?
I can think of 4 theoretical ways to achieve that goal... but in practise do they actually work? Or is it people just saying things that they haven't actually tried, that don't actually work well.
1) Using callers.
2) Chasing - but good luck, steering them.
3) Controlling them by fast travelling to tents.
4) Scents (If they even work that is)
There are a number of obstacles...
1) Getting the black tail pack to turn when you want. The path to my zone is some what of a 'S' shaped route around a lake... and although you can kind of get the pack moving once they are off there is little controlling their direction.
2) The higher level the animal is the more it doesn't do what you want. You really need trivial females to have more regular success.
3) It's unclear when animals are in their "fleeing" behaviour if they are actually fleeing in a random direction, or simply following along there regular route in either direction. There seems to be a "gravity" at play that pulls them to run along regular lines.
4) In certain animal modes like fleeing, you can forget about using your callers, as they won't work - and it's usually at time you need to steer them.
So although I think you can herd animals, it's not sheep dog precision, and it probably mostly involves luck and driving them along their natural route mostly in straight lines.
There were two other things I thought of that I haven't tried much, and that is sleeping to precise times, so the group is in your optimal position... and how hunting pressure could be used to create a boundary.
I did get a trivial female into the zone once, but it wasn't near my ground blinds, and I lost it in bushes, and it wouldn't respond to my caller. Tracking after the fact suggested it corrected back to it's regular route.
At around 19:30 at the bottom of the big lake on the right of the mission zone, there will be Blacktails passing by. Lie in wait and lure one in to about 50m from you using a caller, make sure it's trivial so you have less troubles with it getting spooked. "Fast Crawl" the 500m or so to the mission zone, stopping every 10-20m to quickly use your caller. It should follow 30-50m behind you the entire way. Enter your blind and shoot it. (Make sure the wind isn't a head wind)
It seems the most important rule in luring animals in this game is that you don't spook them, to make sure they are low level like trivial, and lastly to keep them close to you within 30-50m fast crawling. Try to be patient, if you crouch to move faster it can get spooked and flee if you aren't careful and all your work is for nothing.
I am one of those morons who practices actual "Zone Management", lol, and I also go through much trouble trying to establish good hunting in my favorite locations. So I have often had to lure animals away from their vanilla pathways in order to accomplish that.
It is NOT easy, and requires alot of understanding the various mechanics involved. It would take pages of instruction to teach.
And a while back the Devs made some changes to the distance that animals fled, as well as how long before returning. Not to mention the affect of hunting pressure and spooked affects.
So given those changes, it's very likely that it's not even possible to do this anymore. It's been awhile since I've tried it, mostly because they keep doing the population resets which kills all my zone work.
CoTW is failing hard in this regard. Zone management was one of its key features in its first few years, but to appease complainers who couldn't figure out the mechanics involved, the Devs ruined the enjoyment of it completely.
So my typical style of playing has been altered dramatically to not bother with zones at all now.
Listening to the opinions of various people, I also want to complete the mission, so I really want to clear it. I would like to refer to nzmountainclimber's comment.
