I never leave the lodge without it.
Every 4-8 weapon after that was better. Not that it makes a lot of difference. Apart from the Martensson 6.5mm, they all perform pretty much the same.
If you want to buy both Te Awaroa and Mississippi Acres you're set. At that point weapon packs only add style points (which may or may not be worth it for you).
If you want to skip Te Awaroa you are missing out on one of the best 4-8 weapons, so at that point you might want to consider buying either Smoking Barrels or Modern Weapons pack.
If you want to skip Mississippi Acres you are missing out on a good long range class 1 weapon. This can be fixed with either Weapon Pack 1 or Modern Weapons Pack.
If you don't want to buy either of those reserves Modern Weapons Pack offers the best bang for the buck for you.
The advantage of the Hornet is probably, that it is labled for class 2 too, but if you only shoot at class 1 it brings no advantages over the LR, which still has a bigger magazine size. If you have class 1 and 2 animals on your map, I would still prefer the combination of LR and .243.
And yes, M1 is still the best 4-8 weapon due to the easy follow up shots. That gives a slight advantage over .303 and .308. But I agree, there is no big difference between M1, .303 and .308.
The Hornet has much better range and more punch, making it far superior to the .22LR.
