I don't know if I trust the wiki numbers though...they are old, and I think they increased the number of high rated animals and probably even rare fur variants. I only played Rancho del Arroyo 2 or 3 times and killed maybe 5-10 whitetail deer and today I got a gold albino smaller male. Those are also listed at 0.051%...either I got super lucky or maybe fresh maps are seeded with several rares/diamonds even from the start.
As for identifying a melanistic in the dark at long range ... Mmm. You may, but the darkness will sure may it difficult. Your best chance would be during day time. Having the perk/skill? that lets you inspect disturbed vegetation may help to identify and track a melanistic (or any other fur type you are looking for), but I think my friends and I mostly notice a different fur type by sighting/spotting it directly during day time.
Keep looking. Patience is a big part of this game. It may take you a LOT of time before you ever see a rare fur type, while others get lucky and find it on their first day (hate those players).
Thanks Henri!!
