Did you read what I wrote? I found one other guide that didn't work so I was seeing if anybody had something else..
"There's almost nothing on here that knows about this and if anybody knows that would be a massive gamechanger!"
Could've easily used the search button, that's what I did for the exact same thing. Follow that guide and it'll work
Yeah.. I did already. "We tried transferring save data following a guide online but it didn't work after about 30 minutes of attempting." That was the guide you sent that we both followed. I'm not an idiot, I know how to use the search bar and obviously that's the first thing you would do.
If you wanna get an attitude then I ain't gonna help you.
Did you follow the guide properly? Did you change the folder names prior to moving?
If you don't want to help that's perfectly fine, I'm just saying that the guide you sent was the one that we tried for a while with no success, and neither of us could find guides anywhere else.. yes, we followed it properly and also changed the names before moving them. It would either say that there was a corrupted game save or simply start out with only the New Game option available.
Do you still have a backup of the saves? Are you sure it's in the right location (I ask because COTW Is odd with where it places saves, took me a while to find - the one I had to paste to is C:\Users\V\Documents\Avalanche Studios\COTW\Saves\76561198025485142, but I had another folder in there still for my old saves"
When you changed the string of numbers for the folder, did you change it to what it was for your system, instead of the string the author of that post provided?
As long as you've pasted the saves into the correct folder for steam, and changed that string, then it should pop up with a cloud save mismatch when you launch COTW, and it'll give you the option to either keep the cloud save or update with your local one, choose the latter
I had him make a quick backup of all his save files but they’re in a different folder that is zipped. Before following the guide my idea was to change the string to what the Steam save automatically generated but that would give a corrupt file warning in game. Whenever we tried changing the string of numbers to the one listed in the guide it would act as if the game has never been played before.
It gave the cloud mismatch prompt once, and I had him click local files because I don’t believe any of the guides specified. That would be the correct option in this case, given that we’re editing the local files with nothing to do with the cloud?
Yes that is correct, if you can get it to show the file mismatch then that means you did everything properly and are good to update them to the cloud
I'm not sure why it would be giving a corrupted file error sometimes. I remember for mine I had to start the game and create a new save first so that I could figure out the directory, but sounds like you already did that
Okay, so if it brings the mismatch up again it’s best to select the cloud over local files?
No, choose the local files - that will update steam's save files with the ones that you copied over
Okay, what all strings do we need to copy over? Anything inside of the save game file itself or only the name? And did you say to copy the string that the guide said or the one that Steam auto generates when you create a new game?
You'll want to copy over the entire folder and replace everything, just change the name of the folder
Step-by-step that I did, with my directories:
C:\Users\Vince\Documents\Avalanche Studios\COTW\Saves\76561198025485142
--This was my other save file (from xbox not EGS), the folder name originally started with a 4
--Copied entire folder, pasted to below directory with replace all. Also changed name of folder to match what was already in here
C:\Users\Vince\Documents\COTW\Saves\76561198025485142
Directories for you may be different if you have them set so in steam or EGS. After pasting the old save file folder to the new location and replacing all, it should give you that file mismatch warning when you launch the game. Click local files, and you should be good
There's a chance you might be copying the wrong folder over, I did that at first. Inside the folder there should be a subfolder called "slots" and a whole bunch of files like achievements_adf and adf_fog_of_war. If instead if has 8 subfolders (AC, AppData, LocalCache, LocalState...) then you copied the wrong folder over
Okay thanks, we’ll give it a shot and i’ll let you know how it goes.
Hey, I am having the same exact issue and already tried to copy into my local save with the steam cloud disabled. As you mentioned I always get the corrupted save game notification. It seems like there are a few .adf files, which cause this issue, but they have very important information e.g. Weapons/Money/Level. But when I start the epic version with these files it works perfectly fine. I know you posted this 2 years ago, but have you found a solution to this issue? It would help me a lot
