"You might have to... / maybe you should..."-arguments basically prove the point that there are no clear, hard rules as far as the camera is concerned.

Exactly. And the fact that you have no way of knowing is kind of absurd.
As far as I'm aware, I don't even know if you can actually track the amount of game you've bagged anywhere ingame. But you should be able to easily tell whether or not a photo has been registered.
In fact, they could just give you a tiny reward or something. 100 points and 10 XP the first time a photo of a unique individual animal is registered as valid or something like that. Something that wouldn't upset the game's progression balance, but would clearly communicate that you have succesfully captured a photo.
