Coyote hunting mission in Cheelah.
Hi all, I've been having quite a good time with this game recently, I'm about 15hrs in and I have been going through the story without much trouble until I got to this Coyote hunting mission in Cheelah (harvest 2). I play games to have fun, but this mission I have spent days on so far and it just isn't fun any longer. I spent ages looking online for tips but nothing is working. I've tried all different methods, locations and times. Probably 6 hours now on this mission alone.

Any tricks that anyone could share? I've even tried the feed areas during the times but not seen one.

Thanks.

There is a large lake in the mission area on south edge of it borders a coyote need zone just outside the mission area. Setup there at 12am until 3am near the water so you have clear view for 30m and do the standard call every 5 mins until you response and stop then wait for it to flank you, should hear and see it eventually.
I gave up on this one a couple weeks ago, maybe I'll try again in the future

I've been told to set up a tripod and a tent with the wind blowing away from a need zone but I don't have a tent or tripod and like you they don't show up to the need zones when I stake them out

I used a different approach for coyotes. Basically with most other animals you can stalk them. For coyotes it was better to let them stalk you. It takes considerably longer and is pretty boring but with regular calling (and don't get me started on that caller) they will arrive eventually.

But yeah, overall the coyote line of missions were probably the least enjoyable. Fairly tedious.

I have a trick I have shared before
go to the area you need to hunt in find tracks
come back the next day a couple hrs earlier if tracks are there repeat until there are no tracks now you know the general time it traveled through your new kill zone
I used this on the stand out west by the church to catch the bear that traveled through daily
works on coyotes too

I haven't hit this point on Steam yet, but over on PS4, I had a lot of time finishing this one. It took about a week, and I still think I just got lucky with it. But what I ended up doing was coming in, scouting need zones, calling, etc, then just leaving the area for a while, would come back and look around every so often. Biggest issue was that mission animals always knew they were the target, and would never let you see them from any point in the mission area.

The lake that was mentioned above also has a Hunting Stand you can build on the North side of the lake. There is a Coyote Need area 04:30 to 07:30 a little NW but I regularly shot them in the clearing just North of the Stand. There are also Hunting Cabins on the East side of the Lake where Coyotes lurk.

The Hunting Stand is worth building. Whitetails & Mule Deer and Elk travel that area.

If you think this one is bad, wait until the one where you need to heartshot two of them around one of the lakes to the south.

For me, it was just a matter of luck and time until I finally got two coyotes in the area. The key for me was not focusing on trying to get the mission done, but doing order missions and stuff around the area.

im sorry what? is this a form of torture?

For whatever reason the heart shot one was pretty easy. Missed the heart first up then found a drink zone and dropped two in about 10 minutes. About the only hint is that the heart is lower in coyotes than in things like moose or bears.

I think a lot of the Layton missions are.

Eyyyyy, I did it after all that time I just started the game up not giving much of a care about it, I went to the top left lake in Cheelah heard their cry and looked around and found one near a drink spot, then I went to the other side of the lake and found another. Around 2am which I think was key, before I was trying a bit earlier. Also, just use at least a .243 nothing smaller I say. When I harvested Coyotes elsewhere the .223 had trouble killing fast even with organ shot.

Thanks all for the tips, a tricky mission for sure.

The two heart one sounds very painful indeed!!!

The caller not only sounds awful but doesn't appear to do anything at all whenever I tried it!

When missions get hard, and it's because they want you to harvest something specific in a small area, doing the following seems to help me (sometimes one tactic will work, sometimes a combination of these, and even sometimes I need to do all of them):

1) Kill that same animal everywhere else on the map. This will increase the probability of them being where you want them to be or at least close to it in the long run over the course of a few game days.

2) Kill everything else in the mission area. This will open up good spots to become need locations for the animal you need.

3) Scare the animal you need into the area. This is especially effective if you
have done #2 because the animal you need for the mission can actually take over those abandoned need zones once they are forced to be close to them. Run a perimeter approximately 300m beyond the edges of the mission zone. Using an ATV will be faster. Whistling at the same time helps.

4) By this point there really should be a need zone in the mission area for the animal, or at least evidence (tracks and droppings) of that animal passing through it. If you don't see any, now would be a good time to set up an ambush and call them in.

This worked for me for several similar missions.
I've been running around Layton grabbing all the outposts, observation points, and hunting stands. Yesterday I came across a hand full of coyotes while doing so. Although I wasn't in Cheelah I bagged 3 of them by just running toward their warning or mating call and putting them down as they run away.
