What? headshot doesn't kill?
Could a deer run away after a headshot from a polymer 243 round? happened to me twice.

Generally speaking, headshotting game is not the best method. Their skulls are a bit tougher than you'd think, so heart, spine, lung shots are the best way to go.

unless you put it right into the brain ( about the size of a small woman's fist) it wont drop em.
take the heart shot.

If you hit the brain it is a instant kill otherwise it is a flesh wound. I have downed some animals with a brain shot and some have run off with just being wounded.

I've been trying every now and then to brain shot easy animals to get the steam Zombie achievement. It has yet to work for me. I think I'm just gonna start braining Roe deer with my 7mm until I get the achievement.

even rl shooting a deer in head is a pretty tedious to setup when i could just make the heart/lung shot and take a whole 5 secs

I've been going after brown bears at night in Medved-Taiga as I seem to run in to quite a few in the SW corner of map. The most powerful calibre I have at the moment is a .270 (I'm still pretty low level as I've just gotten back into the game). What I do is just walk around or run depending on your preferred speed and eventually I'll run into a bear who is standing up on his hind legs protecting his territory. Thats when I pull up the .270 and give him one between the eyes. Drops em like a sack of potatoes. Skull/Brain every time... just make good shot placement.
