Effects of tent placement?
Are there any side effects of placing a tent nearby while you hunt? Do tents block spawns or scare animals away for eg?

Not that I know of.
The tents don't seem to scare the animals away. I have spawned at tents, and there have been tracks right out side.
I've tracked and stalked animals, that have past by my tent.
Apart from being able to sleep in and having an access to the inventory and store. The tents don't have any other effects as far as I know.
I saw once that when putting up or removing the tent it will cause noise and disturb the animals but only when putting it up or taking it down.

Other then that I have not heard of any side effects regarding animals.

And I can't confirm this just something I read somewhere ages ago most likely here by another user so....

I recently pitched a tent at a lookout tower in Nordon. Fast traveled to it the next day around noon and had a bear show up and walk past it within 30min game time. Over the next 2hrs in game time 6 other bears came through one or two at a time (2ea 3-Easy, 3ea 5 Hards, 1 Lvl 2 and 1 Lvl 8). All passed within 20m or so of the tent which was in plain view. It was bears on parade headed towards a lake. So, I'm thinking the animals are not bothered by them at all.

I said 6 but in total 7 bears had come through. More coffee someone, pls. LOL

My understanding is that only setting up or taking down tents will spook nearby animals. Traveling to them will not.

That depends Pic as I just remember something happened to me the other day.

I was on lakes and I fast traveled. I took two steps out my door of my tent and got trampled by a herd of moose that was just outside my tent. So while the fast travel itself won't spook animals those that are close enough to the tent when you spawn into it might very well run if close enough when you start moving around or perhaps if they are close enough to the tent when you spawn in to be within a couple M's/Ft.

Cool thanks i was worried the lights etc might spook stuff away

That's the normal spook mechanic at work and to be expected.

Yeah I know but like in my case where it was sort of related to the fast travel in sense I fast traveled to the tent it did indirectly relate to the tent. Not the tent or the travel itself just the fact that the animals were right outside it when I came in. But you are right is just the normal spook effect but something to consider when traveling.

My case scared the living daylights out of me step out the tent door and BAM run over by a speeding moose fleeing the area. between the two that hit me took almost most my health had to sleep to recover HA HA

what happens if you die?

You spawn at the nearest outpost/tent, whichever is closest to where you died.

ok cool thanks
thats why if it's a hard to reach spot get a tent up ASAP like other day I decided to take a break from hunting and went mountain climbing. Yes climbing as alot of the peaks even Mt Kraken can be reached and as I went I would have a tent with me and put it up then I grabbed another from storage and went alittle further and put it down then fast traveled back to the first one and picked it up and then fast traveled back to the newer tent and continued my climb. Kept doing this until the mountain became too steep to put it down and then put one on top of Mt kraken when i reached the peak!

Had I not done this I would have been dead and miles away from where I was rather then pretty close as like kraken you have to go way behind it to reach a climbable spot!
