Wind and Scent
Question I have wondered about maybe someone can answer.

The game description says scent lure reaches 213 to 270 yards. But is that in a preimeter around us, or does it act according to wind direction and limited to within that directional cone which shows in the indicator?

So if wind is in our face is that distance reduced.

And has anyone else noticed that since Trupatch, anoimals have been responding to calls from a much greatre distance and even coming in from so far out that you cant hear their response but you can watch the circular indicator and see how they are heading your way.

might be coincidence but i have been noticing this for awhile now.

The scent and call areas of effectiveness are directly influenced by wind. A strong wind carries both further downwind and in a narrower band (much like the wind fan on the HUD). How much further downwind will either travel is up for debate. It is foolish tho believe everything in the Codex when it comes to how long or how far a spray or call will be effective. Obviously, the further they go the less effective they will be. Remember that lures and odor eliminator are designed to be applied to vegetation and not the hunter. Hunters that move after using the odor eliminator effectively eliminate the benefit of using it in the first place.

This is easily verifiable too.

When you get an elk call (for example), angle yourself into a shoot spot that has a tree forward at your preferred range (preferably downwind) lined up with the call position. Walk down, spray the tree, come back to your shoot spot and call.

Guaranteed elk will stop at the tree and because you're already dialled in at your range it's an easy integrity kill - good for bow hunting.

Cover scent is applied directly to the hunter.

I'm going to have to experiment with this. I heard someone else say this recently too. I might be wrong but I am now experiencing this as I play. I have thought that scent lure and mask is applied to the player, and stays with him/her as they move. In classic you can apply lure to a ground position and walk away from it using it as a distraction. But I have noticed that when applied in CoTW that animals will be lured to your location as you move, not where you were when you applied it. It would be nice if I was wrong though. However back to the OP, Ed, how can you confirm your take on the wind affect? Where do you get this info? Confirmation of this would be crucial to my gameplay strategy, as would having some sort of timer.

IRL when i use scent, Doe urine I cover my boots in it. regularly including the soles. If I decide I'm going to seat awhile i'll spot drop all over the place, I carry cover scent as well and use a lot while in the field applying to my clothes.

I know this game is immersive nucken lol, but not IRL . What are the actual program codes?

OK so in the game i use cover scent all the time, buying 50 at a time. I think it works in the game. along with knowing the wind direction. I think the DEVs have done a pretty good job of recreating RL in this game. IMO.

I agree nucken, and I cant hunt without it, I've tried,. But that's not the question. We know wind direction comes into play regarding its effectiveness but when u spray it, does that effect spread out 360 degrees around you or only in the direction the wind blows?

This is need to know because I wouldn't waste it if it was not being made available to an animal because of wind direction. No sense spraying a lure if the animal is in wrong direction, where if it spreads out 360 degrees than maybe wind direction simply affects intensity values. These are the questions.

I get it, I wouldn't think it would spread 360 degrees forward if the wind is in your face. probably pretty limited as you move forward, depending on how fast you're moving.

Same reason predators like dogs and lions roll in herbivore droppings.

I've smeared deer dung on my hunting togs...seemed to work. Upset my then wife when she opened the garbage bag containing my hunting gear to wash them though...wasn't impressed.

I only wish using urine around my outdoor marijuana plants years ago worked. The deer gobbled it anyway :steamsad::steamfacepalm::steamhappy:

On windy days the scent lure does not spread evenly around the spot it is used. Depending upon the wind speed it may not spread upwind at all and since we have very few calm days...i only consider using it to attract downwind animals then move laterally away from the spot so a passing critter hits the lure scent before it hits mine.
