Any way to recover old save game?
My son accidentally started a new game without me knowing. All my progress is gone, from what I can tell. Is there any way I can recover my old character, or is it just gone forever?

Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Only do this if you know what you are doing!

Maybe try this. (backup everything first, copy folder COTW and everything in it to a second location) you should have 3 folders in C:\Users\XYZ\Documents\Avalanche Studios\COTW\Saves\XXX\slots....
Zero, one and two should be their name. Think it is some kind of backup (do not know how it works tho)

Try Copy/replace the content in one of the folders to C:\Users\XYZ\Documents\Avalanche Studios\COTW\Saves\XXX\ (XYZ = username, XXX = your "game" ID).

Restart game after every Copy/replace.

If you have Steam save on it may not work, try it in Offline mode first.

Again.. Only do this if you know what you are doing!

Good luck!

Unless you made a copy of your savegame file it's gone for good. I back mine up at least once a week for insurance. The good news is it doesn't reset your lodge or any animals you've taxi'd but all your other game progress is permanently reset.

I save the game daily. That way when something strange has happened when I log in the next day (like tents vanishing, outposts that were unlocked are now locked again, trophies vanishing from the trophy room, not being given any option but to start a new game (no "continue" button) or all my progress is lost for some reason, I can just restore the save.

If you know when the incident took place you could use windows back up and restore to restore your computer if you have an earlier restore point. Windows back up and restore is found in the computers control panel. Because the save games files are supposedly held on your hard drive in the game files ... this method should work.

hm, never had a problem but just to be sure. Is it the complete "....COTW/saves" folder which we have to secure or only some in there ?

all just copy the whole saves folder, I keep 5 running backups each time I close the game and delete the first 4 once I reach 5 and start again. I have a link to the folder on desktop so I just click that then copy paste the save folder

If you go into that folder, there's a file with a name that's just a really long number. It's just that file you need.

I believe steam cloud will have an archive of old save games that you can get access to. I've used it before for this game but can't of the top of my head remember how.

Just FYI, if your son wants to play to, you can share the game with him on his own account. You can share it with up to five family members on steam. Too late to save you lost game, but maybe prevent it from happening in the future.

The good thing, is you get have fun playing the game over again and this time, it goes a lot faster because you know what you are doing.

why isnt there a option on steam for this game to save or restore files ?

You can go to your Steam cloud if you have it enabled and download old save game files for Hunter COTW from there.

https://www.howtogeek.com/428491/HOW-TO-DOWNLOAD-YOUR-SAVE-GAMES-FROM-STEAM-CLOUD/

You can search through and find player information save files for different dates and times.

I cant guarantee it will work but it might be worth playing around with.

Hi. You can take a look at your available cloud files with this url :
https://store.steampowered.com/account/remotestorage

But if Steam cloud was available when your son started a new game, the files should be exactly the same as you have on your drive. And there is no snapshot of previous saves on the cloud, as far as I know.

It will probably only work if you chose the option for a FILE HISTORY.....
