How far can we hear animals?
I have this curiosity. At what distance can we begin to hear animal calls? 200m? 250m?

unless there is a (( )) I can't tell the sounds direction regardless.
So what would it matter ?
But yeah I've no idea what distance.
All I know is I can hear it.... somewhere.

The furthest call that I've verified the distance of came from a Moose at 190 meters.

You can see the acoustic rings further away than you can hear the vocals. For me its seems to be within 200 meters for me to hear them. What really matters though is how far away can they hear you. When I hear a mating call vocal coming from downwind I usually just ignore it. 9 times out of 10 it's just the animal telling me it's smelled me and is far enough away from me to not be overly bothered by it. Hard to sneak up on an animal that might be 200 meters away and already knows where I am.

Me personally is very annoyed by being able to hear calls from further away than your callers reach, often when you try to call the animal you just heard, and it is 300m away and not able to hear you (or behind a 100m mountain).... you spend time trying to call it in going the direction you heard it, but it is traveling away from you (or behind a 100m mountain) and never even heard the call from you.

Nowdays, unless I see the animal I just ignore it.. no idea to start calling unless you KNOW that it is in the callers range.

Benefits:
You can start running towards the call and maybe encounter the animal.

Disadvantages:
Running usually spooks the animal before the range of the caller, so unless you run for 10 seconds and then walk for 20 seconds using the caller. It will take a very long time until you MAYBE can catch up with the animal and NOT spook it, because if you spook it ONCE the caller is useless for about irl 5min (nervous state).

Don't like that you can hear them but they cant hear you.
I have encounter many many times for example when I have spent a good time trying to catch up on the animal, it is calling and calling, I'm in a very good hiding position and start calling and calling (expecting that if I can hear it, It can hear me).... and the animal is 230m away and the caller range is 200m. Do not make any sense to me.

Thank you for your appreciations. I had the flawed thougt that it could be 250 meters because that was the farthest lenght the callers reached(besides duck and goose callers, of course. But for sure I can't hear them from 500m away). I suppose there isn't an official answer.
