Te Awaroa - Last of its Kind
I have a rather large problem, namely the Te Awaroa moose. Having never shot a moose before, I aimed for its chest as if I was shooting a deer and the damn thing ran off faster than I could follow it. It now appears to be out in the woods somewhere but I have no idea where exactly, and now my questline is stuck. Help?

I should've just took a damn picture.

Did you kill it? If not, it might be back in the same area in another day or so and you can have another go at it. If your map says it's dead then you'll have begin a circular pattern search outwards from the hit spot until you find its tracks can follow the blood trail. I've found many dead animals right along the edge of the hunting pressure created when they died. BTW, the POA for a frontal heart shot on a moose is about 1" up from the very bottom of it's chest. If you shoot high that tough muscle, gristle and sternum is very good at stopping bullet penetration.

Not sure how to help you. But first, what gun and ammo did you use? Moose are one of the toughest animals in this game. If you shot it in the chest dead center above heart, chances are the bullet slid between the lungs not hitting either. The Moose not gonna die from that shot.

If you used a low caliber like a .243 on a Moose, chest shot will just make it mad. I not sure how the quest is programmed. But unless you hit that moose with a 600 grain arrow/bolt or the 454 revolver up close, its probably still alive.

Was there hunting pressure where you shot it at?

@Autobot The thing is, I don't know if I killed it. The map has zero info about the health of the tracked animal for me. Also, the quest gives you tracks up to where the moose is, but after I shot it I got no tracks or blood trails. Apparently the only way to follow it is by the calls it continually makes as it runs away. Thanks for the POA, that will be very helpful in future.

@Kraxin-Kari I used a Stradivarius .27, hit just behind the front shoulder where I thought the lungs would be, like a deer. I pretty much never aim for the heart because it's such a small target. There is currently hunting pressure on the spot where I shot it, does that mean it's lying dead somewhere?

Yes, but if you logged out the game without harvesting it, it will repop exactly as is. Thats if it goes by same coding as a regular animal. No telling how that quest is coded. Maybe it will be repopped back at that spot next time you in the game. May need to contact customer support to see what they say.

It's cool, panic over. I worked out that just changing reserves does the same job at resetting it. I switched to the largest calibre rifle I had, went back out and downed him. Thanks everyone for your help.

I had a similar problem. I was following the moose then a nice buck presented itself and I shot it lol. Then I lost the sounds. Gonna try changing reserves and coming back, thanks.

I did kill it, or at least there is hunting pressure where I shot it, and there weren’t any signs. No blood splatter, no tracks, nothing. Only thing I have to go off of trying to find the carcass is the last vocal call it did. Even my dog can’t find blood.

I was going to suggest Dog, but obviously not. Best bet is to restart, or rezone to another map as others did, and just bring the largest rifle you can, with a larger magazine size. If you can get two lung shots off within 50-75 meters, it should go down pretty quick.

Just as a side note. Try validating your steam files. I had problems with ducks not showing, they do now. Not the same problem, I know, but worth a try.

I just did this mission. First time it was night and I ran expecting to find him and get a picture but you really hunt it like any other animal. So I scared it off. Changed reserves and came back and he started over running to that sandbar and I just shot him from deep in the woods pretty far away and it dropped right there and I completed the mission.
