We badly need a class 1-2 rifle for Layton and Vurhonga. As it is right now, you basically have to carry 4 rifles to have either of those places fully covered, and do it well. I mean yeah you can use the 7mm and do it with 3 rifles, but it's not good for grinding respawns at Layton or shooting anything bigger than class 7. A class 1-2 rifle would let you carry the M1 and the .300 mag and still get in under the weight limit if you like to carry a tent or tripod in your loadout. A .204 Ruger might be good for the class 1-2 niche. Is there anything else you'd like to see in game in this general slot?
We also need a viable class 3-7 rifle with decent range and poly ammo. The Mosin in game doesn't have enough penetration or effective range to be a real option. I like Weatherbys, and I'm a little suprised there aren't any in game. Weatherby .270 or .257 mag seem like they'd be a good fit. Or maybe they could just downrate the 6.5mm to match its performance in game.
What guns would you like to see in game, and what niches would they fill?
Too bad for someone who loves guns.
I'm not trusting bear spray in that situation. Knowing my luck, the bear would have a taste for spicy food.
It'll be a .454 or 12 ga slugs next time I head up there. Haven't decided which. Not sure how much practice I'd need to get good enough with the rhino. 12 ga is heavy as hell to carry on a 15 mile day hike, but if it saves me or somebody I care about, it's worth it.
I carry it on my wader belt ready to pull out when needed. It doesn't get in the way or catch on anything. Just carry it on the back of the belt. You won't even know it's there. Except when you need it.
I'd use it for black bears, but like I said I'm not generally concerned enough about them to carry anything. I just sing to myself or something stupid like that to make a little noise and let them know I'm around and they stay away. I've spent years cumulatively outdoors in the Colorado back country, and never run into a bear on accident. Don't know if you're familiar with the name, but Giles Alkire gave me a great piece of advice when I was young for getting along in bear country. "Don't carry any honey on you, and hum a little tune on the trail". That's all the bear defense I've ever needed in CO.
Moose are a bigger concern lately because they're getting pretty thick in places and really don't give a ****. They can be gentle to the point of being almost tame, or they can decide to lose it on someone for seemingly no reason at all. You never know what you're going to get when you run into them. I've witnessed several moose encounters that nearly turned ugly. Watched one chase a lady around a tree for 30 seconds trying to get at her. I have considered carrying pepper spray or a pistol for them.
A charging grizzly is a whole other ballgame. The areas I'm talking about up in WY, the grizzlies don't care that you're making noise. They're starting to associate human noise as a dinner bell, and they don't have any fear at all. I'm alot more confident in being able to stop a 800 lb grizzly with a nice big slug than with a can of pepper spray. I've been shooting shotguns since I could tie my shoes, and would have no problem hitting one at 40-50 yards. If a grizzly decides to charge and I actually get a second to react, I want it dead before it even gets in pepper spray range.
I worked a gold claim with a buddy on a creek in Alaska deep in the bush. We had encounters with grizzly everyday. He had one go beyond a bluff charge and he pumped six 44 mags into it. I had a .458 mag to stop charges and killed it with one shot.
I had a few charges that I tried the bear spray on and it always stopped the bear. The second it hit them they would veer off to the side and take off. They keep coming with a gun.
I'm sure i've had more grizz charges than hunters and fisherman. The spray works but it's your choice.
Any bear can kill you. But Black Bears account for 6 out of 10 attacks and also fatal attacks, with the Brown Bear being responsible for 3 out of 10 attacks and 4 out of ten fatalities. Grizzlys are responsible for 1 out of 10 attacks, but there has not been a recorded fatality due to a grizzly attack in decades.
Why is this? There is an old saying I learned as a child about bear behavior.
"A grizzly will maul you, a black bear will eat you."
Grizzlies don't like the taste of human flesh. Humans are no on the menu. Black bears love it and you are just desert to them. This why most black bear attacks end in death.
So those of you that have no respect for black bears and fear Grizzlies; you have it backwards.
I have lived in countries where firearms were illegal, so I know your pain. I love this game, but I have to tell you, as an experienced, real-life hunter with over 40 years of experience, the firearm ballistics in this game have no basis in reality. Even the organs on the animals are in the wrong place. The devs did a great job of trying to the player a great environment, and like you, that is my favorite thing about this game, but when it comes to the guns, they are not even trying to replicate real life. Either they have no real-life experience, or they are trying to make the game more interesting by tweaking the gun's effectiveness.
I also have a .177 air rifle. An RWS Diana model 36. It was built in West Germany in 1987. It is all original and I still hunt with it today. Here are some photos.
