7mm vs 30-06
I've been using the 30-06 for a while but have recently unlocked the 7mm. Is there a compelling reason to get the 7mm? I know that irl I'd most definitely prefer the 7mm magnum over a 30-06 no question, not sure if the guns are realistic in game or not.

No, the firearms/ballistics are not realistic.

30.06 is far better in my opinion for one reason.
The 7mm is a dreadful break action meaning no follow up shots....

Which one hits harder, and how about once you start getting into shooting really long shots?

Did anyone notice false effective range for each ammo?

To be honest I can't remember the ammo stats off the top of my head, but the 30.06 is good for deer at range.
I dropped half a dozen fallow deer, on the New Zealand map earlier, from 150 to 280 yards, with no problem.

If you're gonna try for bigger game (moose) I'd use the .300 or .338

Personally, I don't tend to bother with moose, they run too far even when they are double lunged......

Thanks for the response. Yeah, I double lunged a Moose from 345 meters with the 30-06 and it ran a very long ways. That's actually what made me wonder if I should be upgrading my rifle for the bigger animals. I don't think I've unlocked the .300 yet, not sure about the .338

I think the biggest advantage with the 7mm is the versatility. With certain loadouts, you can carry 1 rifle for class 4-9, which is a very wide range. This would enable a full rifle setup (.22, 243/223, and 7mm) plus a bow in one loadout for example. The bullet has slightly better stats than the 30-06, but equivalent stats to the .303 IIRC.

The .338 is available sooner and 15K cheaper than the .300. I think the .338 has a bit more punch at distance than the .300 but either one can handle a Moose at -150 meters nicely. IMO neither the 7mm or the 30.06 should be rated for Class 8 animals but that's because I don't like to wind up having to spend a lot of time following blood trails. BTW the AI in this game does not tell us how badly a vital is damaged. Be it a nick, scratch or blown to smithereens, it's all the same to what is says on the harvest screen, but not the same in how far the animal goes after being hit. I'm amazed you got a dbl lung hit on a moose at 300+ meters with the 30.06 even if one was only scratched. That's highly unusual in this game.

Oof. I just checked and it was only one lung.

The .300 and the .338 are practically identical in penetration, but the .300 is more accurate at long range and is a bolt action rather than a single shot break action. The only way I find the 7mm to be superior to the .30-06 is that it is rated for classes 4-9, rather than just 4-8.

the drilling rifle outclasses every gun in the game it can hunt all game from 1 to 9
and the hi powerd rifle round drops mouse like swating a fly

The harvest screen does indicate a percentage of damage for each shot. Although it is a bit suspect as I've known animals to eventually go down after being hit in the ear 😆

As written above, if you want hunt 9 category animals (without penalty) you need 7mm (it's rated 4-9), it's only advantage againts .30-06 in my opinion.

Since they tweaked the backpacks it's made it a lot easier to carry more items without too much of a penalty (the small backpack).
So I don't use any break action rifles, including the drilling rifle.
The amount of times I've shot at an animal, from distance, and forgotten to change from shells to bullets has happened far too often, haha.

With the "Pack Mule" skill (or perk, I can never remember which is which) and a small backpack, I can carry 3 rifles, a bow (or xbow), a handgun, scopes, all my callers and a tent!!
