Shotgun for when they're up close and when they first start flying.... then switch to 22 to get a couple as they get further away

which shotgun?

Be careful when you hunt Geese. It's not uncommon to have some of those you shoot while they are on the ground to burrow underground and wind up beyond your harvesting ability. Best to simply hit the x key to put them in the air before you shoot.

Nordin semi-auto 20 ga. You can get three shots off very fast, and then switch to the .22.

I'm using the Cacciatore 12G pump gun with 6 cartridge magazin and the Virant .22LR for when they're flying farther away.

@Nightwalker.... yeah I ran across that once. I couldn't harvest the goose. It was like buried beneath the surface of the ground. Obviously a bug.

Personally, I take both if I'm specifically going for any kind of birds. I prefer the Nordin 20GA personally, but the Cacciatore 12G is also a great choice. Call them in, take a few down with your shotgun, then switch to the Virant .22 for any you want that are flying off since you are able to make 10 quick shots with it.

I've had decent luck using the .45 pistol loaded with the .410 birdshot, if you have that DLC. 6 rapid shots for nearby geese, than switch to something else. For that matter, I used the .22 pistol for geese too, to grind my pistol score. Now that the scope is fixed for it, it would be even more useful.
However, when I'm just shooting for fun, I use the Cacciatore alone. I'm probably not as good a shot as the folks above, but I've had fairly limited success in shooting geese after unloading all 6 rounds from the pump--when I did attempt that, it usually involved a lot more time walking trying to find a poorly shot bird. In the time I spent (sometimes unsuccessfully) tracking those longer shots, I could have bagged 2-3x more if I'd stuck with the 6 near shots, picked those up, and gotten back to the blind quickly.
If you do take a longer shot, it can be useful to quickly switch to binoculars, and keep the bird spotted. When it falls out of the air, you will have a pin on your map for it's last known alive location, which should be very close to where it fell. If it leaves the draw distance before falling, and it showed 0-25% health, you can always try projecting a line from your current location, through the last-seen position for your search--I've had that work a few times.
