With out a screenshot of the harvest screen it'd be hard to guess, shot placement, wrong ammo, missed a vital?

FYI, I shot a few max lvls and only received a gold. i think maybe everyone does encounter this from time to time.

I have killed three legendary reds and never got more than gold. Not sure if it is a bug or intended.

Can't find diamond hare either. Looking for months now. A few gold hare but never a diamond. So far only 1 diamond duck. Looks like i'm not allowed to shoot a diamond animal...

Look, levels don't (and shouldn't) guarantee a diamond rating. Everyone wants diamonds because they're very rare. That's what makes them special and exciting to get. If every "medium" goat or "legendary" red deer was a diamond, it would cheapen the experience of finding that rare one that isn't. I would hate knowing what I was going to get. I love the surprise of seeing that diamond rating. My opinion of course, but I never want to say, "Meh, another diamond."
To the OP, if the animal's score was in the diamond range, but you got gold, you must not have passed the harvest checks. You have to pass them all to get a diamond rating. Like NuCKEnFuTs said, one or more of the following would have to be the reason: wrong ammo for the animal's class, more than two hits, vital organs missed, or trophy organs hit.
I have a diamond red deer in my trophy lodge, so I know they're out there. Also, my diamond was "mythical," not "legendary."

I'm going to go out on a limb and assume that if the OP knows what the point threshold is for gold/diamond, they also know how harvest checks work.

Without a screenshot of the harvest screen we can't say for sure what happened.

The trophy rating is high enough, so he either missed a harvest check or it's bugged.

u did not pass harvest check pls check on youtube what the harvest check is

Now i think of it.... no vital organs hit. Mea culpa, mea maxima culpa....

In my experience Ducks are probably the only species where a Level 2 can be a Diamond as opposed to a Level 3 certainty and I have taken alot. Beside the odd bug where lower levels are Diamonds , remember Reindeer/Caribou/Water Buffalo glitch the highest level does not guarantee a Diamond even with all the harvest ticks. The more high levels you harvest the better the chances of Diamond spawns. I generally only take potential Golds where ever possible except for rares.

When you fail to get a check in the box for any of the 4 areas of the harvest check your animal is automatically downgraded one medal level. I've found that a 9-Legendary Red Deer has a better chance of NOT being a diamond than it does of actually scoring high enough to be one. An 8 Red Deer, Bison, Buffalo or any kind of predator making it since the last patch is highly unlikely.

Other species where max level animals tend to fall short of being diamonds (meaning a 1 in 5 chance or less) are Cape Buffalo, Water Buffalo (although the odds are better than they are for a Cape), Moose, Male Gemsbok (maybe a 1 in 10 chance on those, shoot the female level 4s with really tall horns or any 5-Medium female Gemsbok instead), Roe deer, Caribou and Reindeer. Granted, I might just have been unlucky but it's how it's been for me since the last patch.

Since the last patch, those species that I have managed to score diamond animals that were 1 step lower than the max level for their species are Rocky Mtn Elk, turkey, ducks in PF and Siberia, Becite Ibex, Axis deer, Female Gemsbok and Wildebeast. At one time or another I've had max level animals for all the remaining species in the game fall short of being diamonds (except for rabbits/hares of which I have never even glimpsed a max level of any kind). Remember to use the right ammo (not just the right class of rifle or bow), hit the animal no more than 2x, hit a vital organ and don't even scratch the trophy organ.

In terms of diamond, it's not only the level, it's the level combined with the gender, the trophy score and the weight of the animal to get the opportunity to have it legendary, even if all of them are combined correctly, it still is not a guaranteed diamond, you still need to get the perfect shot with the correct caliber. Also your consecutive harvest bonus plays a big role.

In the end, this makes for 6 factors which will need to line up. Have seen plenty of ppl hunting stuff ingame just casually, come across a possible diamond and then ♥♥♥♥ it up because they used the wrong caliber because they were excited ;)

Conseq Harvest and Quick Kill no longer matter when it comes to the animals score. All we need is to do is find an animal with a high enough TR and to pass the harvest check. For some missions a QK requirement still exists, but that falls under the session score. The shot has to hit the heart, lung, liver or break the animals neck unless it's one of those critters whose trophy score is determined by weight alone (jackals, yotes, fox, turkeys, rabbits etc...) then it doesn't matter where you hit them.
