FYI, I shot a few max lvls and only received a gold. i think maybe everyone does encounter this from time to time.
To the OP, if the animal's score was in the diamond range, but you got gold, you must not have passed the harvest checks. You have to pass them all to get a diamond rating. Like NuCKEnFuTs said, one or more of the following would have to be the reason: wrong ammo for the animal's class, more than two hits, vital organs missed, or trophy organs hit.
I have a diamond red deer in my trophy lodge, so I know they're out there. Also, my diamond was "mythical," not "legendary."
The trophy rating is high enough, so he either missed a harvest check or it's bugged.
Other species where max level animals tend to fall short of being diamonds (meaning a 1 in 5 chance or less) are Cape Buffalo, Water Buffalo (although the odds are better than they are for a Cape), Moose, Male Gemsbok (maybe a 1 in 10 chance on those, shoot the female level 4s with really tall horns or any 5-Medium female Gemsbok instead), Roe deer, Caribou and Reindeer. Granted, I might just have been unlucky but it's how it's been for me since the last patch.
Since the last patch, those species that I have managed to score diamond animals that were 1 step lower than the max level for their species are Rocky Mtn Elk, turkey, ducks in PF and Siberia, Becite Ibex, Axis deer, Female Gemsbok and Wildebeast. At one time or another I've had max level animals for all the remaining species in the game fall short of being diamonds (except for rabbits/hares of which I have never even glimpsed a max level of any kind). Remember to use the right ammo (not just the right class of rifle or bow), hit the animal no more than 2x, hit a vital organ and don't even scratch the trophy organ.
In the end, this makes for 6 factors which will need to line up. Have seen plenty of ppl hunting stuff ingame just casually, come across a possible diamond and then ♥♥♥♥ it up because they used the wrong caliber because they were excited ;)
