Can't seem to hit my targets using bow
I've had rabbits bolt on me like 3 times now whenever i tried to shoot them with a bow.
They were at close range, I had my crosshair on target would have been a perfectly clean kill if I used a rifle but for some reason the arrows missed their target every time. Iam starting to suspect that there is some kind of gimmick to using bows in the game that i just cannot seem to figure out. Can you give me some advice?

The easiest way is go test aim at ranges. If you have a lot of levels maxing zeroing can make ya life easy. If ya dont want to commit to zeroing, then learn the 3 pin sight at a range and make sure ya always range your target. Also don't forget the wind when ya start going for shots 30m+.

With a lil practice you'll be an ace in no time.

ummm ... rabiits are really small targets.
bullets drop after a longer distance. arrows drop a lot more. to compensate all scopes are set to a distance to make shure to compensate that drop off at given distance. without the zero setting perk it is really difficult to hit anything that is not close to the standard/set distance.
To get a feeling for hitting with a bow, i would suggest to visit the bow shooting gallery on parque fernado reserve. they have targets set for 10/20/30/50 meters at least. (If you dont own that dlc, you can visit in multiplayer and use the shooting gallery. it is close to where you start.)
other than that only the high tec visir from the high tech weapon pack might help. it works with a system of 2 pin markers. after using it, it adjusts your aim point to a location, where you have to shoot, to hit a the second markers position.

Go to weapons under the guides section. There is one for bows and crossbows. I believe it has a section in it on what the default settings are for 3 and 5 pin sights. As far as the zeroing perk; I personally don't use it. After some practice, I got to where I was pretty good with the 5 pin sight and estimating the correct hold over.

Also, which bow sight are you using? You can't really aim right at the target and hit it. Bottom pin(s) are for longer range, and the upper pin(s) are for closer range. The easiest is the sight from the high-tech pack. You put the red dot on the target and push the use key. It then displays a green dot that you put on the target to hit it at the particular range. Do keep in mind that arrow weight still needs to be accounted for so you might need a tad more hold over with the 600 grain arrow at long range.

You are right, it is difficult, but not impossible..

I use zeroing and use the default sight for bow, it can help ya manage weight, the zeroing doesn't take much to learn. Saying never is ridiculous and not giving all info. It's up to the person to decide what they want to use to fit their play style

Despite unpopular opinion I always use the the Ranger perk from the handgun tree. It allows for pretty accurate bow shots since its a rangefinder ability.

On the three point sight the red dot is 100m, yellow 50m and green is more for 10m ish. Note that these numbers are from 420gr arrows. Its a bit different for the other arrows.

I currently have around 30k bow profiency so I've used the bow alot, from my experience it gets alot easier with practice but I still use the Ranger perk alot as guidence.

I keep the Ranger perk equipped as well. It has helped in a lot of situations where I've needed to shoot pretty quick and didn't have time to swap to a rangefinder. My bow prof is currently at 33090.

I agree, when prowling high vegetation areas I always have the bow equipped, usually I just stumble upon random animals and have to make quick shots. But also when using callers I really do like the Ranger perk cause usually the animal is moving towards you and I usually want to snag it just around 50m when hunting animals that are easily spooked, since I know the yellow dot is 50m for the 420gr which works for most animals.

As a begginer Iam using the "Brightside Single Pin Sight" with 420g arrows.

Do you have the crossbow dlc?, they behave a bit more like guns and have a scope available directly if I'm not mistaken

I dont currently own any DLCs, but Iam okay with learning the hard way as long as I know what Iam doing.

If you go into multiplayer you can visit parque fernandos shooting range even if you dont own the dlc. https://thehuntercotw.fandom.com/wiki/Parque_Fernando_Archery_Range?file=ParqueMap_2_arrow2.jpg

Basically it's a decent way to learn where on the single pin sight which different distances are located. Also the ammo is free when standing in the shed and you should get a popup on where you've hit your target.

That single pin is the worst and hardest of the bow sights. It obscures small targets and makes shooting at a distance pretty difficult for the same reason. There is no real reference for the amount of holdover you need to hit anything even if you know the range of the target. You really have to practice to get a feel for the amount of holdover.
