Need tips for hunting Coyotes
I have the mission to hunt 2 coyotes in Cheelah and a mission to harvest a fox with a bow.

I managed to call in a coyote while prone on a rock in Cheelah, and took a perfect shot at about 10m, but the game screwed me by glitching and thinking that my gun was in the rock, so the bullet went nowhere. So much for hunting prone on a rock...

All the other coyotes I have harvested have been in circumstances when I was hunting other game, and happened upon the coyote, and managed to call it in close enough for a shot. I am very much not looking forward to this mission of hunting a fox with a bow, as it seems really difficult to get foxes/coyotes to come in close enough for a bow shot.

The one coyote that I called in for a close-up shot was while I was somewhat near a rabbit need zone. Is this the place to specifically hunt coyotes/foxes?

I have found coyote drinking need zones, and tried hunting there at the appropriate times, but never actually saw any coyotes there or even more coyote tracks there, and the coyote drinking need zone soon turned into a black-tailed deer drinking need zone.

I have found coyote rest zones, but never managed to call in a coyote from these locations, or seen any coyotes resting there.

Are there coyote feed zones, that I haven't found yet, or are the rabbit zones the place where coyotes/foxes hunt and feed?

12am too 3am setup a hide or tripod if you have the DLC for it near a drinking zone with clear space around it too at least 20 meters. Then use the caller every 5mins, until you get an answering call and stop calling for 10 mins and wait. Then the direction the call came from face it and the coyote will end up on your left or right as they always flank you.

Ideally you want the tripod for the extra height which makes spotting them easier. if you dont have the DLC and use a rock to wait on, always be at the edge so your barrel is poking out from the edge or as you have found shots can hit the rock you are on
crossbow may also work

Coyotes are a lot like red fox, but sneakier and easier to scare. Takes patience. I also found, like gray wolves, that they roam a lot, and not always stay close to the need zone icon on the map. If I find red deer or caribou need zones, they will be in that exact spot every time. Other animals like wolves, foxes and coyote, are often somewhere in the need zone vicinity but it can differ as much as 300-400 yards. Patience is key with coyotes I suppose :steamhappy:

Another thing to try is to find a rocky area and position yourself so that the coyote has to cross it. It makes the same sound as you do when crossing rocks. I set up at one of the small lakes so that the lake was to my back and the rock field was across my front.

As mentioned above, they almost never come straight in to a call. They'll usually circle to try and come in from down wind and will come in from the left or right flank. Anything you can do to position yourself to limit this behavior will also help.

In Cheelah, I have found a Black-tailed deer drinking need zone, with a good amount of coyote tracks in and out of this area, but I did not see any coyote drinking footprint clusters. I suppose I need to set up a tripod here, and wait, and wait. :(

Multiple animals will use the same zone so setting up there when you find the coyote tracks in and out of that area is a good bet.

use the high tech hunting pack night vison binos too if it is not raining or foggy then it will be easeir to spot drinking coyotes

If you hear a warning call, immediately go prone or at the least crouch/hide if you aren't already and look in that direction for a while. If there are free sight lines, you might be able to see them when they decide to move on and e.g. see if they react to your call if you must use a bow, else you simply can shoot them. They are generally hard to make out against the ground, though, and often will disappear completely in high grass.
If you hear multiple warning calls, it's either a group or it is trying to come in your direction, then you can simply wait in a good position hidden or out of the wind, depending on why it noticed you. E.g. if you stayed well hidden and without movement and get a warning call downwind you can be pretty sure it was your smell and vice versa.

If you chased it off, it will often flee in a straight line, and sometimes rest a bit at the end of it (often shot one in that position) and/or return not necessarily directly, but somewhat close to the original path, especially if you haven't disturbed it too much.

You can also run them down with relatively sure success although that's hardly in the spirit of the game, but you can combine the different tactics, e.g. chase them over a large clearing and wait at the edge of it. You need a bit of patience, though, and should be aware that it's not guaranteed it will return.
Sometimes I do something else and just keep the audio, which will alert me if something approaches.

There's also another thread for hunting fox with a bow in this very subforum that was recently updated.

Coyote feeding zones are where rabbit carcasses lie around, haven't noticed any noticable overlap with rabbit need zones, although that would make sense (but the animals tend to ignore each other mostly). You'll usually find them in the late night / early morning.

I about lost my mind on this one
I personally got the high tech pack night vision was able to see them in the rocks around the lake at night and finished it that night.
If the rain and fog is too much at that night go to setting turn off fog makes a huge difference.
