Personally, I enjoy the game very much. The things that it does well (especially the environments), it does VERY well. The things it does poorly, at this present time, are not so poorly that the game is annoying or unplayable. I have over 1000 hrs in the game, and I'm not tired of it by a long shot. I expect, if it remains playable, to get 1000s more. So, for me it was well worth the purchase price (though there will probably be a sale around Halloween, if you want to wait a bit).
The big question is, I guess, how much do you trust the devs not to break the game severely again. The answer to that one, for me, is, "I don't know." If I didn't already own the game, I might question whether to trust them enough to invest. I certainly won't purchase any new DLC until after I've heard from those who have played it. They made the game unenjoyable for me for a few months, and that was VERY troublesome. Sure, they've put out some fixes, but with each one, there is now some serious anxiety about what new bugs and broken things you'll find. If you do decide to purchase, don't let the Steam cloud keep your saves. Make manual backups of your save files often, and cross your fingers that the next new content won't come with the next new $#*!storm.
To sum up, I love this game. It's the best hunting game currently available. Also, I hate this game because the devs seem unwilling or incapable of properly testing new content or patches. Hope that helps.
Now if you want a game that is relaxing, challenges you to get up close and personal with a very aware prey, and you get great satisfaction spending half an hour to see your shot succeed then you will really love the game. If you love beautiful scenery and different environments then you will love the game. If you have bought early access games and handled the occasional bug with grace you will be able to handle the game.
I love this game. I play it like a sniper, locate a prey, slip in as close as possible to guarantee a solid kill, wait for just the right moment, and dropping that little bastard where he stands without a step in either direction. And also letting it go if the shot is not good because you know he will return the next day.
Like Briansaxton says, without the manual backups, the steam cloud breaks the game. I do not trust the devs any more, mainly because they seem ignore the customer complaints. Especially, since the last game-breaking bug was not repaired in a timely manner. We had to wait for them to release it through a paid DLC.
Would I buy any new maps or DLC ?? NO !!
The shame of it is the developer has taken an excellent game & dragged it into the sewer with their lack of quality control.
With all that said, I do enjoy this game, immensely. I expect to enjoy it for a long time to come, barring any new incidents.
Converting the animal traits & behavior into this digital simulation was well researched. The environments were also well done. Converting RL physics & animations could use some improvement; but, considering the price of the game, were well done.
If you want to try the game out, try the free online version. Be warned, it is a money pit that sucks you dry.
The base game comes with two maps that will keep you busy.
Then wait for a sale. It won't hurt as much......
Having said that, if you want a game that's challenging and relaxing at the same time, this is it. I highly recommend it.
Any other DLC (eg weapon packs, equipment,... just wait with it and buy them gradually over time, when the game is at sale. This way your investment stays way below your 100 $, and if you decide you do not like it you can leave it with the base game.
If I could recommend, suggest something, don't go all in & buy everything.
Go easy & try it out, if you absolutely need to buy this game.
You have been warned.
if you are referring to theHunter Classic... thats a completly different game. also about hunting though^^
it may be from the same company, but certainly a different team working on it (yes they are still "working" on it, a 12 year old game gets bug fixes and new contend!!!)
as for the money sink.. you can earn alot of ingame money with missions and harvesting. in a few average play days, depending how much you play, you can get anything from the store.
its realy so very simple, but sure - you can pay (real money) for the benefit of not having to play for your items :(
back to topic:
Call of the Wild has many issues, they can be quite anoing. for me it was too much, so i went back to Classic.
however, not everybody seems to have the same amount of bugs. some play for hunderds of hours, and dont run into any problem.
some have them from the start. only a few things are realy repeatable, and they "could" be solved.
sadly, as already mentioned, the team is not realy eager to fix what they can. often the fixes come with new expansions, and then introduce new failures (thats the better word for those bugs).
hope you can play without much issues and get to enjoy this (realy do). if not, try the free to play theHunter Classic
