To buy or not to buy
I FINALLY finished my new computer build (Ryzen 5900x) and I wanted to reward my patience with a hunting game. I have fond memories of playing these games when I was younger and everyone seems to point at theHunter: Call of the Wild as the "go to game" for this genre. I am NOT a gamer. I play to unwind and thought I would enjoy the slow and easy pace of a hunting sim. My favorite hunting game was, Rocky Mountain Trophy hunter 3, (yes that's an old game) but it is not playable on Windows 10 and above.
I was set to buy theHunter: Call of the wild - complete set, however I'm concerned with a lot of the complaints I've read about on the internet. Many of them state that after some of the latest updates, this game is nearly unplayable.
How bad is it? Judging by some of the complaints, they still haven't been fixed, so I'm not sure if I want to plop $100.00 down on a game that will not work correctly. I'm guessing my only other choice in games would be, Hunting Simulator 2, however I just picked it up for my Switch.
Any honest advice would be appreciated on whether or not I should buy it or not.

Just read the negative reviews here on steam, they pretty much tell the whole story. Also read the forum threads. Some recent discussions are here

The devs of this game don't have a great track record lately. They seem to break many things whenever they release new content, and then break more things when trying to patch the previous broken things. There are, indeed, several bugs that remain unfixed at this point. However, they have patched out the severe, game-breaking bugs recently.

Personally, I enjoy the game very much. The things that it does well (especially the environments), it does VERY well. The things it does poorly, at this present time, are not so poorly that the game is annoying or unplayable. I have over 1000 hrs in the game, and I'm not tired of it by a long shot. I expect, if it remains playable, to get 1000s more. So, for me it was well worth the purchase price (though there will probably be a sale around Halloween, if you want to wait a bit).

The big question is, I guess, how much do you trust the devs not to break the game severely again. The answer to that one, for me, is, "I don't know." If I didn't already own the game, I might question whether to trust them enough to invest. I certainly won't purchase any new DLC until after I've heard from those who have played it. They made the game unenjoyable for me for a few months, and that was VERY troublesome. Sure, they've put out some fixes, but with each one, there is now some serious anxiety about what new bugs and broken things you'll find. If you do decide to purchase, don't let the Steam cloud keep your saves. Make manual backups of your save files often, and cross your fingers that the next new content won't come with the next new $#*!storm.

To sum up, I love this game. It's the best hunting game currently available. Also, I hate this game because the devs seem unwilling or incapable of properly testing new content or patches. Hope that helps.

I enjoy the game as my friends do bugs or no bugs...so far the last update hasn't been terrible so I do recommend the game...

Many of the people positing horrible reviews make it sound like you cannot play the game at all because of bugs. That just isn't true. I've played over 260 hours without issues that stop me from playing the game. There are YouTube players playing levels with minor issues. So from the aspect of it, just ignore it.

Now if you want a game that is relaxing, challenges you to get up close and personal with a very aware prey, and you get great satisfaction spending half an hour to see your shot succeed then you will really love the game. If you love beautiful scenery and different environments then you will love the game. If you have bought early access games and handled the occasional bug with grace you will be able to handle the game.

I love this game. I play it like a sniper, locate a prey, slip in as close as possible to guarantee a solid kill, wait for just the right moment, and dropping that little bastard where he stands without a step in either direction. And also letting it go if the shot is not good because you know he will return the next day.

Waiting to see if the new content is playable will not help. Steam policy will not let you block broken content. Even if you do not purchase the broken content, it is downloaded. If there are any bugs in the new content, they will surface & you will suffer.

Like Briansaxton says, without the manual backups, the steam cloud breaks the game. I do not trust the devs any more, mainly because they seem ignore the customer complaints. Especially, since the last game-breaking bug was not repaired in a timely manner. We had to wait for them to release it through a paid DLC.

Would I buy any new maps or DLC ?? NO !!

The shame of it is the developer has taken an excellent game & dragged it into the sewer with their lack of quality control.

With all that said, I do enjoy this game, immensely. I expect to enjoy it for a long time to come, barring any new incidents.

Converting the animal traits & behavior into this digital simulation was well researched. The environments were also well done. Converting RL physics & animations could use some improvement; but, considering the price of the game, were well done.

If you want to try the game out, try the free online version. Be warned, it is a money pit that sucks you dry.

The base game comes with two maps that will keep you busy.
Then wait for a sale. It won't hurt as much......

For what it's worth, I play mostly single player and seldom see any bugs other than the fast travel and elevated blind bugs introduced with the last update. Most of the problems appear to be with multiplayer.

Having said that, if you want a game that's challenging and relaxing at the same time, this is it. I highly recommend it.

Just buy the base game for a starter, then explore some of the other maps by joining trustworthy MP server sessions. You can play any map in MP without the need to own it. Only the session host needs to own the map,
Any other DLC (eg weapon packs, equipment,... just wait with it and buy them gradually over time, when the game is at sale. This way your investment stays way below your 100 $, and if you decide you do not like it you can leave it with the base game.

Thank you for all the honest responses. I just learned that there might be a sale in October, so I think I'll wait and buy it at that time. I don't mind bugs, but as some of you have said, some people claim that the game is completely unplayable. Based on your thorough responses, this does not appear to be the case. I look forward to buying the entire pack as it will be a better bargain and hopefully join some of the player discussions in the future. Thanks again.

Enjoy. Looking forward to some of your comments....

The graphics are amazing but the gameplay is slightly dull. Add the 3 million bugs and gliches and the game becomes kinda "meh" mediocre at best even with DLCs.

Maybe you'll change your mind after seeing, experiencing ALL of them every time, every game.

If I could recommend, suggest something, don't go all in & buy everything.
Go easy & try it out, if you absolutely need to buy this game.

You have been warned.

if you are referring to theHunter Classic... thats a completly different game. also about hunting though^^

it may be from the same company, but certainly a different team working on it (yes they are still "working" on it, a 12 year old game gets bug fixes and new contend!!!)

as for the money sink.. you can earn alot of ingame money with missions and harvesting. in a few average play days, depending how much you play, you can get anything from the store.

its realy so very simple, but sure - you can pay (real money) for the benefit of not having to play for your items :(

back to topic:

Call of the Wild has many issues, they can be quite anoing. for me it was too much, so i went back to Classic.

however, not everybody seems to have the same amount of bugs. some play for hunderds of hours, and dont run into any problem.
some have them from the start. only a few things are realy repeatable, and they "could" be solved.
sadly, as already mentioned, the team is not realy eager to fix what they can. often the fixes come with new expansions, and then introduce new failures (thats the better word for those bugs).

hope you can play without much issues and get to enjoy this (realy do). if not, try the free to play theHunter Classic
