Got the mission to photograph 2 diff bears.. I am in the mission implied area and tracked this guy down.
Took pic but doesn't register 1/2 do you need to be a certain distance?
It shows Layton Lows area as all orange.. assuming that's correct location?

You need to be somewhere between 40-60 meters for photo missions. You don't have to be in Layton Lows. I completed it in the Balmont region. The map coloring is glitched for this mission. Had the same thing happen when I completed it less than a week ago.

You can complete the mission by taking 2 photos of the same bear as long as either you or it have changed position a little for the 2nd one (it would be enough if the bear simply turned it's head, moved a paw or you crawled one step closer).

Don't shoot the bears (esp the ones that are not black). The follow on missions require Bear Poop. For one three piles of poo from the same bear will do. For the other 3 piles of poo from different bears. You can complete both missions at the same time by doing the latter. Then comes a mission to harvest a bear at Mt Kraken followed by one to put the spot on 3 bears with different color phases (Blonde, Cinn, Brown or Black). After that it's safely open season on any bear you run into.

I have photographed at least 5 bears, have one photo with 3 bears on it, still only have 1 of 2 from the first bear picture I took.

For photos you need to be within 45-60 meters and the body of the bear has to fill a fairly large portion of at least one of the frames. Tall grass that is just a bit higher than belly high, tree branches or bushes that obscure part of the bear may result in the photo not passing muster. For the family photo mission you can actually take 2 pictures of the same bear as long as the bear or you have changed position a little bit for the 2nd photo. I recently started a new game and all my bear did was turn his head for the second photo. Mission completed.
