Mating call distance?
So ive been playing this game for a while now and I always pursue animals when i hear the mating calls, but sometimes they just seem like they vanish. Is there a certain distance you can hear mating calls?

Yes but it depends upon why the vocal was generated in the first place. Mating call vocals are often emitted just prior to an animals entering into or utilizing a need zone but...and this is important...they are also generated when an animal has detected you but is far enough away from you to not be overly bothered by it. The latter is especially true if the animal is downwind but could also be due to our making too much noise. Upon detecting you, If they are nearby (within 100 meters roughly depending upon the species) they may issue a warning call while at 150 meters that same animal may only issue a mating call. I've watched animals issue vocals that were 200 meters away or more and can certainly hear vocal issued over 100 meters away.

When you hear a mating call coming from the same place two or more times the odds are it's in a need zone and your chances of luring it closer by using a caller drop drastically. When I hear a mating call from downwind I generally ignore it unless there's a chance I can move laterally enough to get my stink out of it's face before using a caller. An exception is the coyote which will move to stay downwind of you no matter what you do. They won't come to a call...they just follow you around barking warnings.

Use the caller and call them to you, if you pursue them there is high chance of just spooking the animal.

I am not sure of the exact distance but there does indeed seem to be a tripwire where a mating call turns into warning calls and vice versa. My best guess is it's somewhere between 50-100 meters depending upon the wind and how silently one creeps.
