7mm arguably the best stand alone weapon in game.
I'll grab it
Money is still something I have to watch early on.. few good days i'll recoup it.
I didn't know with the dlc guns if it replaced it in any way.
And to the OP: The 45-70 is a great rifle, you will not regret buying it.
I find the 45-70 quite fun to use but not as useful as the 7mm due to the shorter range.
Id say unlock whatever you want to use first. Theres not much need to min-max in this game (which can be a good thing). I wouldnt prioritize buying it for a mission since you can always do the mission later.
.45-70? It packs a punch, repeats quickly, reloads quickly. I can make a check but IMHO it shoots and reloads faster than even much weaker bolt-actions. So you have higher chance to hit animal twice in the chest during in-game "2 milisecond shock time".
If you want to hunt animals that fit its Class range or you do not care about legality system in the game - it is very good rifle.
7mm was great in the beginning, but with the DLC's it's become obsolete.
agreed the 45-70 is one of the best when used within its range. Most complaints for it are by people trying to take down animals 200m+ with it.
It even has enough power for frontal shots on class 8 animals:
