Question about female animals
Why do I read in many places that killing female animals is bad? Is it just an "ethical" thing or does killing female actually affect my reserve animal population levels?

Irl hunting females is generally legally forbidden, though it has been argued that it's better for the health of the herd to take both sexes. In terms of this game, for the majority of species there's no trophy level females so there's little point in hunting them. Whitetails, for instance, are rated on the size and shape of the antlers and only the males bear antlers. Gemsbok are rated for the size of their horns and since both sexes are horned trophy level females can be found.

It does not affect animal population you will always have same number of male to female and if you kill female she will respawn back as female, only benefits of hunting female is xp and money you get or for leveling guns.

females in game respawn as females, doesn't affect the trophy levels at all except for the few animals where females can be trophies, like the Gemsbok Yogisgoat mentioned.

Well, hunting females gives you money, weapon score and experience points. I'd say these things are pretty useful. So, hunt away them females.

Interesting topic. I too was wondering if killing females would negatively impact the chances for high-score animals to spawn (mostly males).

Yea I find it confusing, especially since once again, one of the main guys on Youtube (won't use names) who does CotW videos and has quite a few views, during several of his videos makes a statement to the affect; "Oh look a female, lets not kill the females". If it's an ethical thing and these guys want to take the sim that extra step than that's cool, but it would be nice to know if there is anything behind this. It's the same guy who uses scent eliminator spray a million times when he sees a diamond potential.

This is not some obscure thing either. As a new player, I watched several videos where statements like those above where hinted at.

Well If I'M hunting for food and you cross my path I will shoot you and then feed my family...If it's in a game and for a trophy most Males have a rack (not boobs) that you can ogle and awe at and mount on a wall and usually get more points for it. If you don't have much money you need to shoot what you can. Shooting a female never affected my game play.

However I'm at a point now...male or female if I see you I will shoot you or not...It's just how I feel at the moment you come into my range.

that's just him/her. animals respawn the same sex. so the only way you can impact the trophies by killing the females is by doing so to the animals that the females can be trophies. Like the Gemsbok above, or rabbits, puma, mtn lions (if they sized those right, females on average are bigger than males), etc.

That's not true at all. In real life hunting female animals can and does happen and is legally allowed should you have the proper tags (depends on species etc etc). The rules that barred hunters from hunting females is quite old now and was a result of low density populations at the time. Now this is at least the way it is in Canada (at least where I live) and it may be different in other places as different areas have different regulations.

Setting aside the legal conversation, most people who say hunting the females is bad is probably coming from an ethical place or as mentioned above, are not aware of new laws etc. Although again, depending on location there may very well be laws baring hunters from hunting females outright or just for that season should the numbers not justify it.

Edit: Took the OP's question to be a real life one and not based in the game. Ooops I guess.

I do not know whether it was forbidde. As (maybe opposed to practical USA) somehow idealistic Europe looked at hunting female as sort of shooting civilians in war. You do not kill mothers.
In more modern times you get your ticket that says what you can kill. Thus it is hunting plan that is your limit.
But that tradition is known to be problematic: I.e. there is overpopulation of the wild boars and one way to try to reduce their population is to shoot female. For obvious reason - you kill male, another replace it in reproduction and nothing change except -1 animal. You shoot female - her entire tree is removed. But ... hunters due to traditions dislike shooting females so they do not and population reduction is less effective

you're confusing true hunters with those piles of trash called Trophy Hunters. True hunters help manage populations. We shoot whatever tags the wildlife management provides after they do their herd studies. Most of my wild game meat over the years has been doe deer or cow elk. I'd prefer to eat that over buck/bull any day, it's more tender and less gamey.

Trophy hunters only go for bucks/bulls, and they only go for the biggest ones they can find. They take the antlers home, and don't give a damn about the rest of the animal. All but 1 of the guide companies out here that do the trophy hunts donate the animal after the trophy idiot has left to local food bank type deals where they butcher and package the meat for people in need. the hides and rest go out to local craftsmen and women to be turned into jewelry, clothes, and other accessories they sell in the guide shops.

Well, I do not. I live in Europe and you cannot do much trophy hunting here as it is expensive. You get kill-tickets for animals that are to be removed from population - certain age, defects (i.e. badly developed antlers) and so on. Shoot even future possible trophy specimen and "Houston, I have a problem".
Trophy? You either buy it or it may be gift ticket i.e to your anniversary (like you are 50, obviously not any of them) and so on
Besides, to some limits I do not mind trophy hunting. I have no issue with ordinary hunter that packs some money to go i.e. for safari to Africa.

But that problem with hunters that have problem with idea of shooting a sow exists even as trophy or pure trophy hunting is rare between common hunters. "Modern aristocracy" may be different story but I do not think they are interested in areas of the common hunting folk.

I never cared for the trophy hanging on the wall look..all them moose heads and antlers everywhere. So Michigan 1970s...That having been said, their meat is delicious.
eagle74 Aug 7, 2020 @ 11:00am
In my area there are strict tag limits on "antler-less" deer which includes females. Also, shooting female turkey is forbidden for the most part. And rifles are not allowed for Toms, only shotgun or bow.

In game, I stopped shooting animals without a TR after I leveled up. But, there are not many downsides to doing it in game, so have at it if you want the money or XP. Just be aware that the big animals show up last, & if you start shooting L1 females, they will never show up to the party at all.
