Shooting with zero set to 300m
I always miss with the .338 when I set it to 300m, but when I leave it at the default 150m I usually have good luck. I've verified distance by looking at the map after spotting. Anyone else having that issue?

Strange, but I use different distances (zeroing) for each weapon I use, because of the same reason. I thought it could be my fault, but if other players experience the same, it could be a mistake in the transmission of the projectile.
Once there was a clue here in this regard: 150 meters = aim higher / 300 meters = aim lower. Nevertheless, I still have no trust in the ballistic.
Go to the shooting range. I have not experienced anything you just said O.o remember that bullet has a travel time, so if animal is further away, it needs to be still.

Done. Experience on the shooting range doesn't help 'on the field'. ..all known!

Yeah, I usually only set to 300 when I get one of those herds grazing or sleeping. So yes, they are standing still. I've decided to just keep it at 150 and aim high
You use the map as your range finder? I use the range finding binos and haven't had an issue using the zeroing perk with the 338 or any other weapon. I'd hit way low if something was at 300m and had the perk set to 150m. I find the perk very accurate actually.
"I've verified distance by looking at the map after spotting." I use range finder but double check with the map icon that appears.

I never took the zeroing perk. I have found it easy enough to hit targets around 320yds. (imperial system) without it. I do a lot of close range bow hunting though.
Usually leave my .338 set at 150m and just adjust my shot for under or over range out to 200m. If I can just see them with the naked eye then I dial up to 300m and adjust according to my gut feel about distance, dont use range finder as yet and have taken many over 300m+ with the .338 and 1-4x scope.Same setup longest vital hit 413m. I find the .338 to be more accurate and deadly than both the .270 and 7mm but maybe I am more used to it's balistics.
To OP, i use the 300m zeroing perk without issue on the .388.

Interestingly i find almost the apposite.

I was really put off the .338 for long range as... i hadn't had it unlocked for long, I spotted a massive moose across a lake. I was hopeful it might be a diamond. I think the shot was 320m. The moose was head on to me, so i went for a risky heart shot. Fired, seemed/felt a good shoot, but the moose took off. I tracked it down & killed it with a second shot. On examining the trophy my 1st shot was spot on.. it just didn't penetrate anyway near enough. It looked like a .234 shot. Don't know WTF happened, but I don't trust the .338 for long range penetration. ( i was using poly tips) I only use it sub 200m now.

There's a few things I don't like with the .338's penetration. For a round that's still supersonic at a mile it seems weak. If I'm not mistaken on a moose you have to penetrate 12-14 inches of flesh before hitting vitals. I highly doubt you'd use a polymer tipped round irl with it, those are designed more for violent expansion, not penetration. You'd more likely use something like the Nosler Partition.
Thanks for the responses. Maybe I am experiencing the lack of penetration and the moose heals before it bleeds out, despite the hit being in a normally lethal location.
